The Waterfront Playhouse opens its season with an encore presentation of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, staged as a live concert event. The Obie Award–winning rock musical has a book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. It premiered off-Broadway in 1998, was adapted into a film in 2001, and its 2014 Broadway production won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

Hedwig is an East German rock singer performing in a run-down venue, telling her own story between songs — a childhood in East Berlin, a botched surgery, a marriage that got her to America, and the protégé who took her music and became famous with it. The score runs from glam rock to ballad, played live throughout.

The Waterfront’s staging keeps the concert format, with Hedwig addressing the audience directly. The material is adult, with frank language and subject matter.
