Celebrate Hemingway's Famed Key West Legacy

Key West's Hemingway Days is the ultimate destination event for literary enthusiasts. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway left an incredible legacy in Key West. Come celebrate that legacy, the literary gifts he left, and his lifestyle. Events include a look-alike contest, a three-day marlin fishing tournament, readings and book signings, 5k run and Paddleboard race, a Key West style running of the bulls, and more.

Daily Activities

  • 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. - “Hemingway Collection” museum days at the Custom House. Discover rare artifacts and memorabilia from Hemingway’s life, including several pieces that inspired his great literary works. (281 Front St.)

Tues., July 16, 2019

  • 6-8 p.m. - Key West Art & Historical Society’s Hemingway Days Mini-Symposium at Old City Hall. This event features talks by contemporary scholars and writers inspired by Hemingway’s work. Registration required; $5 per person (free for KWAHS members). (510 Greene St.)

Wed., July 17, 2019

  • 4 p.m - Final registration for the 37th Annual Stock Island Marina Village Key West Marlin Tournament. Anglers compete for $50,000 for their skill in hooking marlin, spearfish, sailfish, dolphin fish, tuna and wahoo. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)
  • 5-7 p.m. - “Voices, Places, Inspirations” at Old City Hall. This evening of readings and presentations begins with “Papa’s Poems,” presented by members of the acclaimed Key West Poetry Guild. (510 Greene St.) 
  • 5:30 p.m. - Meet the “Papas” at Sloppy Joe’s. “Papa” was Hemingway’s nickname. Get to know the contestants and previous winners of the 38th Annual Sloppy Joe’s Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest. (201 Duval St.)
  • 6-8 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament captains’ meeting, auction and raffle at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)

  • 8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament’s first day of fishing. Day starts at at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)
  • 4-6 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament weigh-in at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)
  • 6 p.m. - Hemingway Look-Alike Society scholarship presentations for Florida Keys students at Sloppy Joe’s Bar. (201 Duval St.)
  • 6:30 p.m. - Preliminary round of Sloppy Joe’s 39th Annual Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest. $35 entry fee. (201 Duval St.)
  • 6:30-8 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament island-style pig roast and cocktails at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)

Fri., July 19, 2019

  • 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament’s second day of fishing. Day starts at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)
  • 11:15 a.m. & 12:15 p.m. - Film Screening at Tropic Cinema of “Hemingway: Between Key West and Cuba,” a documentary by Richard Abella that examines the two islands whose cultures and people shaped Ernest Hemingway’s life and writing for 30+ years. $5 per person. (416 Eaton St.) 
  • 1 p.m. - “Papa” Look-Alike Fish-Off at Conch Republic Seafood Co. docks. (631 Greene St.) 
  • 4-6 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament weigh-in at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.) 
  • 6:30 p.m. - Secondary round of Sloppy Joe’s 39th Annual Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest. $35 entry fee. (201 Duval St.)
  • 6:30-8 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament dockside cocktails and fish fry at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)

Sat., July 20, 2019

  • 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament’s third day of fishing. Day starts at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.)
  • 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. - Caribbean Street Fair, featuring arts, crafts, jewelry, tropical clothing and food, presented by Literacy Volunteers of America–Monroe. (Duval & Front St.)
  • 12 p.m. - Photos with “Papas” at Sloppy Joe’s. (201 Duval St.)
  • 1 p.m. - Running of the Bulls re-enactment, sponsored by Sloppy Joe’s Bar. (201 Duval St.)
  • 1:30 p.m. - Sloppy Joe’s pre-birthday party for “Papa.” (201 Duval St.)
  • 3-5 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament weigh-in at Stock Island Marina Village. (7005 Shrimp Rd.) 
  • 3-7 p.m. - Hemingway 5k Sunset Run/Walk and Paddleboard Race registration at Southernmost Beach Café. $50 entry fee for run/walk, $45 for paddleboard race or $90 for both. (1405 Duval St.)
  • 5:30 p.m. - Paddleboard Race begins along a 3-mile Atlantic Ocean course. Start and finish line is located at Key West’s Southernmost Beach. (1405 Duval St.)
  • 6:30 p.m. - Key West Marlin Tournament awards banquet and silent auction at Margaritaville Key West Resort & Marina. (245 Front St.)
  • 6:30 p.m. - Final round of Sloppy Joe’s 39th annual Hemingway® Look-Alike Contest at Sloppy Joe’s Bar. Free to watch. (201 Duval St.)
  • 7:30 p.m. - Hemingway 5k Sunset Run/Walk starts at the Southernmost Beach Café. (1405 Duval St.)
