Description

The pineapple-or ananas as it's known by its genus name-is the classic symbol of hospitality. This two bedroom, two full bath conch house, aptly named Ananas, is truly the embodiment of warm, welcoming hospitality. Its location, style, and comfort reward the lucky visitors who choose to vacation here. From the neighborly front porch to the private back deck and pool, every accommodation detail has been seen to. Down a hidden, quiet, tree-lined lane, the Ananas address is half a block off Duval and around the corner from the must-see concrete buoy marking the Southernmost Point in the Continental United States.

The idyllic residence is mostly hidden from street view by a deep green foliage hedge spilling over and weaving between the pickets of a white wooden fence. To one side is off-street parking for your car. From here it's a few steps up onto the tiled porch and a white wicker couch grounded by its colorful seat cushion. Pineapple art flanks the front door. Step inside to a hallway that glows with recessed cove lighting, creating an enchanting glimmer where the cypress ceiling meets cork-like composite walls. Other walls in the residence are original Dade County Pine and the floors are Chestnut hardwood. Plenty of the sunshine Key West is famous for streams through the trio of windows that runs down the right side of the hall leading into the great room.

To the immediate left is the first of two pleasing bedrooms, both with en suite full baths. A closet, small chest of basket drawers, and basket storage under the bed in this one provide more than ample space to keep your vacation wardrobe convenient yet out of sight. Lamp tables on either side of the plump queen bed make good places to rest your cell phone, magazine, or book. A window floods the room with daylight or closes with slatted blinds for night. The tiled bath has a large glass shower enclosure with a delightful rainfall nozzle, while an artisan vessel sink adds a sculptural touch to the vanity.

Between the first and second bedrooms, a generous-sized, stacked washer/dryer closet also provides convenient shelves for laundry supplies. The next pocket door on the left opens into the master bedroom and en suite full bath. With its large window, high ceiling, and open beams, this room is spacious, impressive, and comfortable. It has plenty of room for a long desk, closet with shelves and hanging space, and a dresser with lots of drawers. Like every room in the house, there's a flatscreen TV on the wall and this one is perfectly positioned for viewing from the extraordinarily comfortable king bed. The full bath to the left has just been renovated into a large and luxurious, spa-like space. The shower enclosure is naturally brightened but still opaqued by a wave-pattern glass-block window. Again there's a rainfall nozzle for your showering delight. The vanity holds not one but two vessel sinks. Not only does the vanity have storage space of its own, but an antique wooden cabinet with glass doors serves as the linen closet. Next to the commode, a wicker hamper provides a handy receptacle for laundry.

Next comes the great room. Gazing into it from the hall, you see lots of windows and French doors that open to the deck, pool, and garden beyond. Still inside and immediately to the left are a table and chairs suitable for dining or other activities like card or board games. Beyond that is the U-shaped kitchen with an expanse of granite countertop that looks handsome and provides plenty of space for food preparation. All modern appliances are compactly arranged to make preparing a meal easy and pleasurable. Cabinetry above and below provides storage for cooking utensils and dishes. Maybe you don't plan to cook while on vacation. Maybe a microwave is all you need, but this kitchen invites you to do more.

In the adjacent alcove is a glass door that leads to the side yard and a dark wood chest holding wine glasses and decorative platters. On the wall above is a flatscreen TV. Across the room is where you sit if you want to watch TV or engage in conversation. A couch stretches down the opposite wall, providing ample seating. Its pillows add decorative accents and deep-seated comfort. An overhead fan accents the vaulted ceiling while a palm tree lamp and slate-topped coffee table complete the scene stylishly. Of course there's cable, wireless high-speed Internet, stereo, DVD, and central cooling/heating. All this space and comfort is dotted with original works of local artists, but still your eye can't help but look toward the French doors, toward the outside living space.

Tall bamboo fencing and a perimeter of swaying palms ring the deck, providing total privacy and bringing to mind the restful connotations of the word "oasis." Rather than rectangular, the generous sized pool is pleasingly shaped in rounded curves. It's hard to find the line between the sparkling pool water and the blue blue sky. The wooden deck on one side stretches from a covered overhang out into the open air. Here you'll be delighted to find wicker furniture, chaise loungers, a BBQ grill, and an outside shower.

Although Ananas is located in an amazingly quiet neighborhood at the calmer end of Duval Street, you're still just steps from the quirky fun the Conch Republic is famous for. After you've unpacked your flip-flops, it's time to check your myriad options: tours, museums, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you're interested in watersports, all kinds await you: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few. Don't miss visiting the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, Hemingway's House, the Light House Museum, and the Little White House, as well as having your picture taken at the Southernmost Point. Be sure to set a reminder on your cell phone so you don't miss the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon.

For a little different side of entertainment Key West style, there's plenty of music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. If you like beaches, your Ananas accommodations are close to a favorite locals' beach, Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. A snack bar, bathrooms, showers, and picnic tables are available. When you've had enough beach, you can explore the adjacent Civil War era fort, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. And there's so much more; if this is your first trip to America's only Caribbean island, a guidebook or stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center will help make sure you don't miss anything you intended to do.
