Description

The cottage is a cozy hideaway. The poolside area is picture-postcard perfect. The location is in the very heart of Key West's Old Town, a half a block off the world-famous Duval Street. In short, Ann Street Gardens offers the quintessential indoor/outdoor vacation experience you've come to the island to enjoy.

(Ann Street Gardens is a 16+ compound. Regretfully, NO Children under 16 allowed.)

This residence has one bedroom, one full bath, a small kitchen, a living area, and a dining space. But first you'll want to open the doorway from the living room onto the delightful enclosed patio, which then opens to the main attraction-an exquisitely maintained poolside paradise. The pool and landscaped garden area are reserved for the exclusive use of residents of the small enclave your cottage is part of. Chairs, small tables, chaise lounges, and wicker chairs around glass-top tables dot the landscape. Hidden in among the surroundings are more tables and chairs. From any spot you can observe sunshine playing through palm fronds creating a pattern of shadow and bright sparkle over the pool surface. If you look up, you're likely to spot a flock of water birds flying over. Swim, float, sit on the side, and dangle your feet in the refreshing water. Maybe relax in the sun to develop a tan. Or select the shade of a tree for your resting spot where your biggest decision might be whether to read or nap or ponder where you'll go for your next meal.

If you're in the mood for total privacy, you can enjoy the same glorious Key West weather from your enclosed brick patio, part of which is covered and part open to the sky. This area is sizable, really like another room of the cottage, almost doubling the livable square footage. Closest to the house is a small round table with lamp and two chairs under a generous overhang. A little further, in an uncovered area, is a gas grille. Antique bricks under foot and artful arrangements of plants and vases enhance the garden atmosphere. Up two stairs brings you to the second covered area with vaulted ceiling where you'll find a table suitable for serving a meal for one to four. Directly across is a cushioned wicker rocker and large rattan sideboard with six drawers. Above, a Caribbean style ceiling fan with light creates a gentle air flow and illumination for the evening hours. This is definitely the spot where you could barbeque some fresh fish and enjoy it al fresco with a glass or two of chilled wine. Or maybe go out to dinner and return to the patio to spend a few balmy hours sipping cognac under a canopy of stars.

The inside of Ann Street Gardens starts with the living area that includes a wall of glass overlooking the patio. This and other oversized windows throughout fill the cottage with lovely filtered sunlight and views of tropical greenery. The conversation setting includes a deep couch that also serves as a pull-out full bed, an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table, end tables with lamps, and an overstuffed armchair. The opposite wall holds a large flat-screen TV perfectly placed for viewing from the couch or chair. Under that is a brightly painted hutch that adds color, an artistic touch, and storage space. At the end of the room you'll find a small dining table and two chairs nicely placed beside a wall of glass that give you a congenial view as you enjoy a meal here.

Nearby a doorway opens into the bedroom with queen bed flanked by bedside tables with lamps. Above the bed, a Casablanca-type ceiling fan provides air circulation and light. The room is embellished with art work, two windows, and wall mirror that reflects the romantic scene back onto itself. A flat-screen TV is nicely positioned on an opposite wall for watching the news or latest episode of Nurse Jackie from the bed. An armoire in one corner offers plenty of space for your hanging items and four drawers for folding items. Near the rear wall is the entrance to the en suite full bath, which features colorful tile flooring, shelving, and a well-lit mirror over the sink so you can easily check on your tan lines.

The kitchen is small but perfectly functional with storage drawers, stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker, and blender. Again windows on two walls and a cloud white color scheme make this room light and airy and a pleasure to be in.

Your vacation accommodations are just the beginning-the whole of America's only Caribbean island awaits. Since Ann Street Gardens provides off-street parking, you'll find it ever so convenient to leave the car and walk or bike everywhere. For example the Historic Seaport and Boardwalk is over just one block. Follow the wooden walkway along the Key West Historic Seaport to find tall ships offering day and sunset cruises out into the Gulf of Mexico or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing close at hand. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Maybe sit under a banyan tree filled with tiny white lights at funky Schooner Wharf while you eat a fresh Mahi sandwich, listen to local musicians, and gaze out at a harbor full of boats of all descriptions. Or for a higher vantage point, try the rooftop bar at Turtle Kraals.

From the Seaport, the world famous Duval Street with its tours, museums, shops, restaurants, and bars is only a block away. Before you walk too far, be sure to check your cell phone for sunset time so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square. And leave time to hang around for the after party as artists and street performers entertain the crowd with carnival acts, food, and drink. Maybe you've already heard about Dominique and his Flying House Cats, a feline troupe of alley cats that jumps through hoops of fire, walks tightropes, and performs other astounding circus feats.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.

"Key West's Best-Kept Secret"

5 of 5

I honestly hesitated to write this review because I want to keep it all to myself. My husband and I are unwilling transplants, having lived in Key West until about 6 years ago. We still spend a lot of time there, fortunately, and we have stayed many places, including other properties in the Ann Street compound. First of all, the compound is my favorite place on the Island to stay. It's steps from Duval but a world apart. The Ann Street Garden property is the most amazing place. It's magical and perfect, comfortable and casual, with every possible convenience. When I go to my "happy place" in my mind, it's this home. Historic Hideaways is a dream to work with too. No drama, simple and easy. I adore them almost as much as this property.

"Comfy little cottage in a great location."

4 of 5

This is our 22nd year of staying in the Keys, 13th year of strictly staying in Key West. We stay for a little over a week so vacation rentals are ideal - not to keen on hearing housekeeping knocking on doors every morning. Check in is a breeze with Historic Hidaways. The guys in the office took good care of us. The fan in the outdoor room was broken and Tim had a maintenance man here first thing the next morning to fix it.This little cottage has everything you will need. Nicely equipped little kitchen but I too covered up the windows with two tea towels. At night it's a clear view from the pool area into the kitchen. Could use some window coverings. Not much storage, had to put everything on top of or inside the fridge.Wifi is in the kitchen - had to unplug it once to reboot but no other problems with it.Nice sized bedroom and smallish bath. The cute baskets in the bathroom helped to have a place for each other's toiletries. I wasn't quite sure about the comforter (seemed to have some questionable stains...) so I switched it out for an extra one that was provided and threw the red one in the washer the next day. Nice wardrobe closet in the bedroom that had plenty of space for both of us but absolutely no other space for luggage or storage. We found a few places to tuck our bags and get them out of the way. One word of advise, if you can fit your our pillow in your luggage...do it. Lots of pillows were provided but they were ALL the hard flat kind...no fluffiness and no maneuvering for a side sleeper. That was a bummer. Hubby brought his own pillow and I swiped it every morning when he left to go fishing.

"Great location. LIttle storage space. Pool needs heat in October"

4 of 5

We've stayed in this little cottage two years in a row. LOVE how close it is to the fun stuff in old town. The kitchen is so tiny as to be unusable. But who cooks while on vacation? We love the private covered deck. There are a couple problems: The queen size bed is sort of hammock like, and the duvet cover hadn't been changed. I can only hope it gets washed periodically. There isn't much hanging or storage space for luggage and clothing (a single armoir in the bedroom, not closets anywhere). The under bed space has boxes of extra linens for the service staff to get at. The WiFi password hadn't been changed. My tablet and phone logged right in when we arrived for our second visit. There is off street parking for a single car. We didn't use if beyond the first day, otherwise we got around on bicycles. A nice little space for a couple. Though there is a sofa bed, for an additional couple people, this would only work for VERY good friends, as the one bathroom is though the bedroom. The bathroom is tiny, but serviceable. If you're looking for somewhere to spread out, this isn't it. But if you want privacy, check it out!

"Mixed feelings about this cute rental in an ideal location"

3 of 5

When we first arrived at Ann Street Gardens, it was love at first sight. The pool area is amazing and the location is literally one block off Duval. The highlight here is the private outdoor covered area and the pool area. As fas as the interior space... It is small but well equipped. Before you go shopping check under the kitchen sink for past tenants left overs. Laundry Detergent, Dryer sheets , etc. There is also a cabinet under the flat screen TV that has various sunscreens, light bulbs, etc. Bathroom, Off the bedroom. The tub is in advanced stages of peeling and discoloration. I tried spray bleachh to no avail. I was disappointed. We also ran out of bathroom tissue two days prior to leaving. No back stock that we were aware of. Just went to CVS at 12 Duval. I was not calling management for tissue paper. Awkward call right? They musst estimate usage. Otherwise the pictures are accurate.. What you neeed to know: Directly across the street is City Hall and the Visitation Center. The electronic gate to employee parking lot is non stop. You hear it beeping opening an closing all day, even in the pool area. The Conch Tour Trolley Drivers park across the street on their breaks often. Every morning, beetweeen 5 and 7 you will hear the bottles from the city being crashed and dumped. Even wiith windows closed and with A/C, its loud. City Hall is ccurrently being repointed. The machinery is quite loud. Several surrounding Streets are getting new sidewalks , especially Caroline. It's loud. Other things of note you need to understand:Ann Street says no one under 16 is allowed. However, a couple of other properties pay an association fee to use the pool outside the unit and I believe this is for the laundry as well. Sure enough, the loud grandkids of the neighbor checked in last night and adds more noise to the area. Ann Street is a very short one way street, one block off Duval. The drunks love to argue outside, scream, hollar and use the property rubbish can in the driveway to empty the bottles. There is a quiet time between 10-1. Then it gets interesting until 4 in the morning, yes 4. If this is for you, knock yourself out. Property Issues:Three days before leaving, we noticed loud noises in ceiling. Something was living in there! Management was great they responded immediately, butt was somewhat disappointeed that we were expectted to stay at the property to let them in. Theu closed up some lare holes in teh exterior. Internet: Two days before leaving we lost ttelevvision and internett. Again, management was great, but had to stay at property to let tech guy in. More time. The bill apparently, was not paid. Other internet issues: Ignore Network names and passwords given at offfice and in Binderf at Unit. They do not work. Go in the kitchen, look at the router and use all that information. All in all, we did have some nice afternoons at the pool and relaxed, jusst not sure we will come back.

"Perfect stay!"

4 of 5

BEWARE: No blinds in the kitchen and neighbors and anyone at the pool can see you while you are cooking or hanging out. Owner was informed but no action taken. This is why I don't give it a 5 star. Other then that the location is obviously the best if you want to stay near the action. The cottage has all the amenities that you certainly need. Bathroom is a bit small as well as the bedroom. The next door neighbor is outside every day working on anything around his house. He seems to be always upgrading his home. You will hear him outside bright and early. All delivery trucks seem to park right in front of the cottage to delivered their goods to the bars and restaurants. I would stay here again but we would have to cover the kitchen windows like the last time we stayed there. Enjoy Key West!

"Probably the best rental location"

5 of 5

Historic Hideaways provides excellent service for a carefree rental. Ann St. Garden is located near enough to everything (Duval, Mallory Sq.Z. Taylor State Park etc) that you never need a car. Although close to everything Key West, the property is extremely quiet. The Garden area and pool make it ideal for those who wish quiet restful time. The home itself has everything you need from well furnished kitchen, comfortable living areas with good TV's and enough outside furniture to match any persons needs

"Hidden Gem in Old Town Key West"

5 of 5

The Ann St cottage was perfect for our Key West vacation. We parked our car when we arrived and walked everywhere on the island until we left, using the hop-on, hop-off trolley to get around. What we loved best about this property is the outdoor room. It is large and private, making it very comfortable. We ate all of our meals outside! The kitchen is well-equipped and we established a pattern of walking to the nearby seafood market daily - we steamed local lobster at home, grilled tuna and grouper and enjoyed stone crab claws each evening. It was an awesome and affordable way to experience Florida's seafood. One disappointment was that the pool water was too cold to swim and, in November, the daily sunshine did not reach our pool area.

-Mnemosynee on 12/04/2015

"Could not have been better!"

5 of 5

Check-in with Bill was a breeze. He provided the excellent advice that we should see which items (paper plates, soaps, trash bags, etc.) were already in the rental before we went shopping. The rental itself was very clean and contained everything we needed for the visit. The location could not be beat. We were quickly to our destinations whenever we went out. The grounds were quiet and the pool area contained lush tropical landscaping, which created a wonderful environment when we sat out there. The pool itself was large, clean and seemed to never be too warm or cold - so I assume it was temperature regulated. Highlights of the rental were the covered outdoor patio with ceiling fan and large comfortable living room. We have been coming to Key West for several years and this is easily our favorite rental in terms of size, amenities and location. I really have no negative comments about our experience.

-SteveandJulieB on 08/13/2015

"A Hidden Gem!!!"

5 of 5

We loved Ann Street Gardens! A block from Duval 2 blocks from the historic seaport. In the middle of it all but as quiet as can be! The gardens, the pool, the home, all beautiful!! We have been coming to KW for 15 years. This home us a true hidden gem!!!

-Christine S on 05/13/2015

"Stay here, you'll love it."

5 of 5

My wife and I wanted a private getaway and the Ann Street house was just what the doctor ordered. The place was immaculate and just as important; quiet. We stocked the fridge and lived in. I think we moved the car only twice to get groceries. It's only a short walk from the Duval Street but the noise was absolutely minimal, except the weekly recycle truck. But you can live with it. We parked our bikes on the covered porch and rode most everywhere on the island. Key West was very bike friendly. The pool was a bit cool, but it is advertised as unheated, so no surprise there. The pool area is very private. You have a few other cottages off to one side, but you definitely have the home field advantage. We heartily recommend Ann Street--just not the week we'll be back.

"paradise in the keys"

we spent 3 nights here in September , only wish we had stayed for the week . the place was the villa was located just off Duval street but very quite. the rental had everything you could wish for and more plus a great pool to cool off in at the end of the day.would love to go back again

"Reviews are spot on! Perfection!"

5 of 5

I'm currently sitting by the pool at Ann Street gardens, this place is heaven! The cottage provides you with everything you could ask for. Pictures do not give it justice. Ann street gives you the best of both worlds. The action of old town steps away from your secluded oasis. The place is warm, comfortble and inviting. I could not have been more pleased. My only complaint is that I'll have to leave.

-tripmaker2662 on 07/07/2014

"Top notch location, but quiet and serene"

5 of 5

Ann Street is a two-block one-way street, so it is off the beaten path-- despite the fact that it is situated just between Duval and Simonton. There is little traffic and plenty of vegetation, so it really is amazingly quiet and peaceful despite being steps from the Duval madness. The property itself is compact inside, but provides plenty of outdoor living space-- both private and at the shared pool. It was well-equipped with pots, pans, glassware, etc. The bed is not overly plush, but perfectly comfy-- and extra pillows and blankets are provided. The only downsides at all for us-- 1. The tub drained very slowly. We notified management at checkout, so perhaps this issue has been addressed. 2. There is a lot of vegetation around the pool area, so it does not get full sun and the water was not very warm for most of our trip.Small downsides to a great, comfy space in a perfect location. I would definitely stay here again.

"Great escape"

This place was everything we cold wish for. Very comfortable cottage with a nice pool. The location was ideal for lower Duvall and Mallory Sq. We would love to go back in 2015.

"Perfection!"

5 of 5

This unit was awesome! Besides the incredible location, the huge amount of outdoor space was unmatched. The pool wasn't heated but felt good on a hot afternoon. The kitchen is small but offered everything we needed for our stay. We'll plan our next trip around it's availability.

"The Best I Have Found"

5 of 5

I have been coming to Key West for ten years now and have stayed in hotels, on boats and in apts. This is by far the best property I have ever stayed at in Key West. From the ease of the reservation process, to the accomodating management, to the perfect location and the excellent property with everything you could ever need while vacationing....this is the place to be. I hate making these wonderful reviews because I know it will add to the problems of renting this location again.....it is so great, I could not resist. Thank you, Tim

"Return to charm!"

5 of 5

Have just made our 4th visit to ann St and we love it more each year. Historic Hideaways is so accommodating for our off hours arrival. House is totally charming. Location is at absolute center of old downtown but has secluded atmosphere. We walk everywhere. We remain delighted to arrive and sad to depart.

"Great stay"

5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in December. Great location off Duval Street, but quiet. Very safe. 1 off street parking spot, but if flying into Key West airport, a car is not necessary at this location. The apartment was clean. There were beach towels provided. The private lanai was spacious and very nice. Grill worked well. Pool never had anyone at it.I would recommend this to 1-2 people staying in Key West.

"Birthday Vacation"

4 of 5

This is a lovely little cottage that couldn't be more conveniently located. Check-in was quick and easy and we found everything spotless when we arrived. It was well-stocked with kitchen items, cleaning supplies, books and games. There is a huge private covered patio and beyond the privacy gates is a small pool shared by several cottages. Late Oct. found the pool just too cool since there is really very little sun due to the lush landscaping and shade of the trees. If you drive there, it is great to have a private parking space and never worry about parking when you come home; only a block and a half from Sloppy Joes and Duvall St., yet very quiet - except for the daily garbage pick-up around 4am. The aC worked great and there is a ceiling fan over the bed. The kitchen is small but very functional. It was nice to arrive finding ice frozen in the trays in the freezer. The rear of the cottage looks out over the small pool; the front looks at a parking lot and backs of buildings, so not the choice for a view. But...definitely the choice for location, cleanliness and comfort! We would gladly choose this cottage again.

"Location, Location, Location! Plus Cozy and Clean."

5 of 5

We stayed at the Ann Street Gardens location for five nights starting on 11/20/13. We had arranged for the late check-in service, which went very smoothly. They had turned the lights on at the home, which I thought was a nice touch. The location was great, we could not have been closer to the action while still having that Key West feel. You never would have known you were just around the corner from perpetually busy Duval. The loudest thing we encountered was a dumpster being emptied at 6:30 one morning. 5 minute interruption and they were gone. The home itself was cozy and clean and was equipped with just about everything anyone could need. There is a nice private patio to sit out on, with the pool just beyond the gate. Loved it there, it was the perfect set-up and location for my husband and I to enjoy our much deserved get-a-way! We hope to be back same time, same location next year!!

"Loved It!"

5 of 5

This cottage is a perfect get-away for couples of any age; however, my adult daughter and I stayed here a week and it was perfect for us too. We loved the location, the cottage was clean, the pool and gardens were perfect, and there was plenty of privacy. This is not a luxurious 5 star resort like we often see in our mainland coastal cities, but a quaint little cottage with everything you need. It's not extremely quiet here until really late, but who would expect anything less in Key West? I would definitely stay here again.

"Another great trip to Key West"

We have stayed at ann Street Gardens quite a few times. Each time is better than the one before. A perfect place for my husband and I and the perfect location. Thanks!

"Clean and Dry"

5 of 5

Key West had 5 1/2 inches of rain just before we got there, so we were happy that our house was dry, many places were flooded. The house is located close to all the fun of Duval street. It's only about 3 blocks to Mallory square, so it's just a short walk and plenty to see on the way. The house was furnished with everything we needed, we even used the bbq grill to cook some fresh Mahi Mahi that I caught on a fishing trip. The pool was nice and we also enjoyed the covered sitting area. We took our car to the beach, the parking on the street was free. If we came back to Key West we would stay at ann Street Gardens again.

"Beautiful hideaway"

5 of 5

Historic Hideaways is a fantastic company to deal with. The ease of the entire process was wonderful. Our stay at the ann Street Gardens was wonderful. We could not have found a better location...one block off of Duval, yet very quiet and peaceful. The cottage was very comfortable and very clean and the fact we had a parking spot right at the front door was an extra advantage. We loved our stay there!!!

"Could have been better."

3 of 5

Reserving and checking in went as expected. The renter was friendly and efficient. We liked the home for the most part, but we did feel like poor cousins compared to our friends who stayed at ann Street Tranquility in the same complex. They had a bathroom and kitchen with updated and lovely finishes, including a dishwasher and washer/dryer within the unit. Our washer/dryer was located outside and therefore accessible to the complex. We couldn't count on having access when we needed it and yet were required to leave clean towels. Then, the dryer didn't work. The location was wonderful and the best part.It was a short walk to Mallory Square and Duval Street. The pool area was a nice retreat, but the overgrown plantings along the fence kept it from being a truly beautiful area.If this area was groomed, it would open up a more comfortable seating area at the pool and a stunning view.

Manager Response:

Ann Street Gardens does not require the Guest to leave clean towels or do any laundry before leaving as it is a shared Washer/Dryer (for the complex). This requirement only applies to private Washer/Dryer homes.
