To say this townhouse condominium is worth the amassed treasure of Blackbeard, one of the most notorious and wealthy pirates in seafaring history, is a major understatement. The 1950's era art deco Steamplant at water's edge has been quintessentially transformed into Old Town Key West's most opulent vacation community. Indulge yourself at Blackbeard's premiere 3,000 square feet, three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath residence unit offering the full palette of imaginable amenities, including a rooftop terrace with private pool 70 feet above the edge of the historic Key West harbor. Daytime, sunset, and evening views are the best on the island and nothing short of spectacular.

Enter this private oasis through a security gate into a professionally landscaped and meticulously maintained garden. Walk the brick pathway that winds through an oasis of grasses accented with native tropical foliage and stately trees. Enter the building through security doors into an impeccably appointed foyer featuring two large and compelling paintings representative of the historic Steamplant once housed here. A second secure entrance opens to two covered parking spaces reserved for this unit. Adjacent is security access to a private elevator that opens onto all levels of the residence. The parking's proximity to the elevator is perfectly planned to add the convenience of easy transfer of groceries or goods from your car.

When the elevator opens into the first of three levels, you're in a foyer with an open-plan staircase that seems to lift up toward unending space and luxury. Two doors on this first level open into large bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with twin beds. Each features spacious en suite full baths with spacious showers and luxurious Jacuzzi tubs, granite counters, and marble floors. One wall of each bedroom is all glass and opens through sliding glass doors onto private balconies overlooking Key West. Let the full ambient light in or soften it down with the cascade bamboo shades. Large flat-screen TVs hang on the wall opposite the beds for viewing convenience. One room has a dresser and one a desk. Wood items throughout are of dark, rich tones. Both bedrooms have Casablanca-style ceiling fans to circulate tropical breezes flowing in from the balcony. The walk-in closets feature drawers and copious hanging space to house the whole of your tropical wardrobe and then some. Lamps add complementary light and provide a sense of warmth. Across the hall, the other door on this level opens into a generous laundry room with storage cabinets overhead, top-of-the-line appliances, a sink, and plenty of room for baskets and washing products with enough space leftover for any kind of sporting or beach paraphernalia.

Up the grand staircase or up another floor in the elevator (your choice) is the formal living space spread out leisurely in an open floor plan with twelve-foot ceilings. This area starts with a natural fiber sisal area rug over dark hardwood flooring that delineates the space for the dining table and eight chairs. The area is cozy enough for two and spacious enough for a crowd. Complementing the space is a large seascape in greens and blues against a cloud-white wall. Across the way is a guest half-bath and professional kitchen where Viking appliances gleam in black and chrome. Added touches are a warming oven and under-counter wine cooler to please any wine aficionado. The kitchen's U-shaped design is stylish and efficient. Granite countertops and birch cabinetry create plenty of space for assembling a fresh conch salad or staging a whole gourmet meal. Pass your meal through to the dining area or eat it at the counter seated comfortably in upholstered chair-backed stools. The kitchen is spot-lit for brightness and glows with an under-counter ocean blueness for ambience.

In harmony with the dining area, the living area also starts with a sisal area rug over dark hardwood flooring, which delineates the space for the inviting couch flanked by four chairs with well-padded arms, deep seats, and colorful accent pillows. In the center is a classic wood and glass coffee table ready to hold you guidebook or glass or the book you're reading. Not only is this conversation area comfortable, but it takes advantage of an entire wall of glass that offers unmatched outside vistas. Or open the sliding glass doors and step out onto the large balcony. It goes without saying that cable, wireless high-speed internet, stereo, and DVD player are available when you need them.

The wall of glass and the balcony continue to the right into the master bedroom with king bed and en suite full bath with steam shower. Lamps, bedside tables, dresser, and walk-in closet make this the room you'll be delighted to retire to after a full day and evening exploring what the incomparable southernmost island has to offer. And if this still isn't enough to convince you, ascend another floor to your private roof-top terrace with private pool, dining area, lounge chairs, and gas grill. Relax here with almost 360 views of the most storied saltwater island in the world. Enjoy a sunrise latte, a refreshing midday dip in the pool, or a cocktail at sunset toasting as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears at the horizon. Need more entertaining space? Up a short flight of stairs brings you to the spacious Top of the Island Rooftop Sunset Harbor Bar & Deck available to residents for private parties and events.

When you get ready to explore, you'll find that the Steamplant is located at the edge of the Historic Seaport. Follow the wooden board walk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset sails or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, there's all kinds like diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Walk several blocks to fabulous Duval Street where you'll find plenty of entertainment: tours, museums, shopping, and over two hundred restaurants, and bars. Unless you're been to the island before, pick up a guidebook to insure you don't miss the island's vibrant art and culture scene with live music, lectures, plays, movies, art galleries, and artists' talks.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival.

"Beautiful condo."

5 of 5

We very much enjoyed this condo. It is beautifully decorated and there is a high priority for safety. Each condo has a private elevator that can only be entered with a specific fob. The roof-top dipping pool was wonderful on those really hot days. We enjoy laying in the sun & it was nice to be able to dip in the pool from time to time. We walked everywhere we chose to go, it's wonderful exercise and a way to see the island first hand. Restaurants and favorite watering holes are within a 15 to 20 minute walk.We enjoyed this condo & location so much that we booked again for next year for two months, January & February. We highly recommend it to anyone wanting high-end accommodations.
