Description

When you're ready for a tropical vacation, Calypso Cottage is ready for you. This cozy one bedroom, one full bath Old Town property is one of the six stand-alone units that comprise the Land's End compound originally built for cigar workers back when the island was the hand-rolled-cigar capital of the world. These historic structures have undergone a total renovation inside and out, including the addition of vaulted ceilings, central air conditioning, hardwood floors, granite countertops, a residents-only heated pool, and professional landscaping. Despite its beauty and private tranquility, the highly desirable location is only half a block from Key West's Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk, and only four blocks from world-famous Duval Street.

From the street, all that's visible is a white gate and a meandering brick pathway lined on both sides with leafy green foliage. Through the gate, a little further along the walk, nestled between the inviting heated pool and a stand of royal palms is Calypso Cottage. Up a few stairs brings you to the front door, which opens into a compact open floor plan with sitting area, dining area, and kitchen. The walls are painted in a tropical palate and decorated with the work of noted local artists such as Martha dePoo. You can tell the décor has been designed by someone with that special touch. Windows with louvered blinds let in plenty of ambient daylight or create a more subdued light effect for night. Of course, there's central AC, wireless high-speed internet, DVD player, and cable TV.

The attractive couch along with a two-tier coffee table create the perfect area for conversation, for reading that novel you brought along, for watching the flat-screen TV on the opposite wall, or even for stretching out for a midday nap. Colorful throw pillows add comfort and a pop of island ambiance. Next to this, a table and two chairs create the perfect spot for coffee or meals or a board game. The kitchen is conveniently just an arms-length away. Refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, lovely oak cabinets, and granite countertops attest to the clever design that makes this small cottage so amazingly livable.

Around the corner is a short hallway of highly polished white oak flooring with a closet that stores the washer/dryer and still has plenty of space for clothes, both folded and hanging. The hallway opens into the bedroom and full bath. On one side is a bench and desk for your computer and other electronics. On the other is a queen bed dressed in a coral, seahorse, and shell motif bedding. A wall sconce above the bed allows direct but gentle evening-time lighting

The back door opens out from the bedroom and leads onto a wood landing and a few stairs. To the left is a private brick patio that allows for the kind of outdoor living so prized on this tropical island. Perhaps have an evening cocktail at the charming café table and four chairs provided. Maybe pick up some in-season veggies from Help Yourself natural foods market and fresh local fish from Eaton Street Seafood Market-both very close by-to barbeque at the gas grill. Then eat your delicious meal alfresco under the stars.

To the right of the back door are the deck and classic rectangular pool ringed in professional landscaping that creates privacy and beauty. Picture yourself floating in the temperature-controlled turquoise water, maybe gazing up to watch the sun arc across the sky or to be amazed by a squadron of pelicans flying in formation. When you've had enough of the pool, the deck is waiting with woven patio furniture that matches the dark green trim of the cottages. For sure you'll want to stretch out on a chaise lounge to sip a cool beverage or soak up some rays.

From here, it's easy to explore Key West's Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don't miss the Raw Bar, the Tower Bar upstairs at Turtle Kraals, Schooner Wharf where you can eat a fresh Mahi sandwich under a banyan tree filled with tiny white lights, and the Conch Republic Seafood Restaurant.

In a few more blocks you'll find yourself on Duval, where you'll find what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square on the Gulf of Mexico, where locals and visitors alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon and applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. Then hang around as artists and street performers entertain the enthusiastic crowd. Be sure to catch Dominique and his Flying House Cats, an amazing feline troupe that jumps through hoops of fire, walks tightropes, and performs other astounding circus feats. Will the juggler, Dennis the bagpiper, Dale the sword swallower, singers, preachers, a unicyclist, balloon artists, and other merry-makers vie for and get your attention.

To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events page at http://www.historichideaways.com/key-west-events/. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday in the Key West Citizen.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for detail.
