Having spent a long weekend in this one bedroom, one and a half bath apartment, one previous guest described it as a "cozy condo hideaway in the heart of historic Key West." The historic significance is close to home. It starts with the white stucco building that houses this suite and other vacation condos. The three-story building was constructed in 1910 for Dr. J. G. Campbell, a surgeon dentist specializing in gold crowns, bridges, and plate work. Locals talk of how the structure was used as a spy headquarters during WWII but, of course, no records seem to exist to confirm that. The Campbell Courtyard, as the distinctive compound is called today, fronts Fleming Street. The thoroughfare was named for one of the island's founding fathers, John Fleeming, who arrived in 1822. No, that's not a typo. They dropped an "e" when the first street sign was made.

The first thing you notice when you open the door is the light. One living room wall is basically a large sliding glass door opening onto a small balcony furnished with comfortable wicker chairs. From this 2nd floor vantage point, all you see is foliage. Think of it as a tropical tree house. This is the sort of place where you can forget your hectic lifestyle and sink into "island time," where everything moves at a much slower pace. A small closet just off the patio hides a convenient washer/dryer.

Back inside, the cozy condo has an appealing open-floor plan with living room, dining area, and kitchen flowing comfortably into one another. Against one wall, there's a comfortable couch, covered in muted brown fabric jazzed up with colorful fringed accent pillows. A large leather ottoman in front of it works as additional seating or a coffee table and a large wicker chair that carries over the fringed pillow accent adds one more place to relax. Above the chair, another window floods the space with more light. A barn wood cabinet painted in weathered antique style completes the "conversation and entertainment area." It features a TV, a stereo system, and of course a wireless connection.

When you feel hungry, you can try any of the almost two hundred restaurants in Key West. On the other hand, maybe you prefer to bring food in and eat at your round dining table with two bar chairs. A third option is to whip up a meal in the L-shaped, modern kitchen with ample counter tops, stainless appliances, and three panels of windows above the sink. A half bath completes the first floor.

Up a spiral staircase that makes wind chime sounds when you ascend or descend, you'll find a generous master bedroom with full bath. The king bed is dressed in coral print linens with a coral and seascape wall hanging nearby. Multiple windows with sheer drape panels make this floor as light and inviting as the first floor. You can't help but think of this as an extremely livable habitat.

If you're a sun worshiper, you still haven't explored the best part. The large pool area is ringed in a white picket fence and plenty of lush greenery. The heated pool is long and inviting. Lounge in chaises right next to the pool or move to the deck to sit in one of the six comfy chairs around the patio table. A tan market umbrella provides this seating area with ambience and shade should you decide you've had enough solar heat for the day.

The condo space and the pool are sheltered and secluded, making it easy to forget that Fleming Street is somewhere out front. But it's your pathway to the rest of this amazing place, romantically referred to as the island of dreams wedged between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. For example, the Campbell Courtyard is steps from Faustos Food Palace, which has been in the same location on Fleming since 1936. If you go in, don't leave without grabbing a free copy of Paradise, a publication listing upcoming events: the music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events. Within a few blocks, you'll find the legendary Duval Street with shopping, food, and bars galore. Walk a few blocks in another direction and you'll find the Historic Seaport with more restaurants, more tall ship sunset sails, more water sport opportunities than you could possibly take advantage of in one short vacation. Maybe that means you need to return to Key West. You'll likely think that's a great idea after your stay at Campbell Courtyard.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on our website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events include milezerokeywest.com and Paradise, which comes out every Thursday.

"Great week in the Campbell Suite! "

5 of 5

We rented this condo for a week from Historic Hideaways. Tim was great to work with. The condo itself is very nice and some upgrades have been made from the photos. It was perfect for my husband and I. The Campbell Suite is very well stocked, it had everything we needed to cook a few meals and there were extra paper products. It was also very nice to have the washer and dryer in a closet off the porch. The location is perfect. Very close to Duval St. and equally as close to the historic seaport where we ate most nights. We were worried about the parking situation, but we're pleasantly surprised. We were able to find a spot on in front of the unit on Fleming St all week. Although we were there during the slower tourist season. Overall we loved the Campbell Suite and would highly recommend it and Historic Hideaways for anyone looking for a great rental property in Key West.

"We will be back next winter for another six weeks-that says it all."

5 of 5

The location(Fleming Street) is ideal. Our unit came equipped with everything we could want and then some. Historic Hideaways, the agency overseeing our rental, was superb. The unit is on two floors which could be a problem for someone with mobility issues.

"Great Vacation Location"

5 of 5

We found the unit on FlipKey but it is managed by Historic Hideaways. Historic Hideaways was easy to deal with. I made the reservation by phone but the rest of the stuff was done by email. The gentleman we dealt with for check-in and check-out was very pleasant and helpful. We were very happy with the unit. It was close to Duval Street but away from the noise. The bed was excellent. We both slept so well that we want to find out what kind of mattress, so we can get one for home. We ate all our meals out but there was a complete kitchen so we could have cooked in. There was a grocery store down about a block and an organic food market a block or two the other way. We rented bikes one day from a place a 5 minute walk away, but they would have delivered. No shuttle service came with this unit but the taxi to and from the airport only cost $9 per person. The driver stopped for us to pick up the keys for check in and then took us to the unit and it worked as well the other way when we left. The pool was clean, although not huge. We were the only ones there when we went. Although this unit was a little pricer than some of the others we considered we would definitely rent it again.

"Ideal rental!"

5 of 5

We have stayed in Key West several times now, but the Campbell Suite has been by far the most ideal rental. It is central walking to almost anywhere that you would like to go. There is a small grocery store, a coffee shop, pizza place and even a used book store just a few blocks away. We loved this location. The unit it self had everything that you could want for the week. Clean and efficient. Tim was a great manager for this unit.

"Great Vacation Getaway!"

5 of 5

We stayed 6 nights in the Campbell suite this December, and we loved everything about it. The bed was super comfy, the kitchen was very well stocked for preparing meals and frozen drinks, the balcony was private, the pool was heated, yet quite small. Parking was at a premium, however we had our bikes that we could store inside the secure courtyard. A grocery store is just one block away that has everything you will need for your meals, drinks, snacks. There was ample room for the two of us. We will definitely be staying here again on our next visit to Key West. We rented from HistoricHideaways and they were easy and quite helpful!!!

"Clean, Conveniently located and nice facilities."

4 of 5

This property was very conveniently located. It was very clean and offered all the necessary amenities. The spiral staircase was a little treacherous going up/down. The management office wasn't necessarily rude, but they weren't overly friendly either. They seemed almost annoyed at travelers with their cheery attitudes; or, maybe it was just having to answer the same ol' stupid questions most visitors have when arriving. But, that's the hospitality biz. Again, they were JUST nice enough so as not to offend. Thankfully, we really didn't deal with them again after the check-in process. But, all in all I would stay here again. Nice accommodations and common court area.

"Comfortably furnished and decorated with a very convenient locat"

5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at the Campbell Suite. It served our requirements nicely. The amenities and location were excellent. Potential visitors do need to note that the entrance to the unit is on the 2nd floor, and there is also a circular metal staircase to get from the living area of the unit up to the bedroom. So occupants do need to be reasonably fit to do the stairs and get their luggage up there. We had no problems with this, but others need to be aware depending on their individual circumstances. As far as improvements, we did notice that there was some water that leaked into the closet on the 2nd floor and accumulated a bit in the center of the closet floor after the heavy rain the morning of Tue. 3/25. Didn't cause any problems for us but just wanted to bring it to someone's attention to check into before it gets worse.

"Beautiful Condo in a Beautiful and Fun Place"

5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Campbell Suite. The condo was well furnished and had a complete kitchen. It is also located a few blocks off Duvall St so is quiet but not far from dozens of bars. Restaurants, and shops.

"What a well appointed home in the beautiful historic district of"

5 of 5

My husband and I absolutely loved this precious suite in one of the most beautiful parts of historic Key West. We were able to walk to almost every part of the area that we visited during our week in January. Even though there was no designated parking we were able to unload and find a parking spot within two blocks. We enjoyed the many quaint eating places and the neighborhood grocery. I particulary loved the great little kitchen for morning coffee and snacks and the access to our own washer and dryer. We would recommend Campbell Suite to anyone as long as they were able to climb multiple flights of stairs. The fact that this unit was on the second floor and that the bedroom was up another flight would be the only thing that would keep a couple from totally enjoying their stay.
