Description

Enjoy traditional island living in this turn of the century, three-bedroom, 1 full, 2 half bath home, a private residence on a block of historic architectural gems only two blocks from Duval and the Seaport. Four sea captains have made this their home and filled it with unique and eclectic furnishings from their many travels. Connecting the past with the present, the Captain's Quarters offers more than history; it provides modern functionality with the kind of private outside space visitors come to Key West to enjoy-a spa/hot tub, covered deck, tropical gardens, outside shower, and brick walkways. Imagine yourself sitting on the deck in midday breezes or lighting candles as you enjoy a cocktail in the hot tub after sunset.

The Captain's Quarters is located on Caroline Street, named for one of the female siblings of John Whitehead, who once owned a large chunk of the island. From the street, the two-story white wood home is framed in lush Lady Palm and other tropical foliage. The front porch is large enough for wicker chairs and a classic porch swing for two. The shutters and front door is subtle in a soft turquoise. A distinctive Georgian style gas lamp post stands to the left, and to the right is a brick driveway that adds a splash of colonial red to the scene.

Inside the front door, the living room space is to the left. The traditional Key West open concept design allows the eye to travel comfortably from couch to dining space to kitchen to the covered deck. Couch, occasional chairs, side tables, lamps, and area rug define a comfy area perfect for sitting to plan what you want to do with your time in paradise. Spread out your guidebook and map of the city on the rough-hewn, reclaimed wood coffee table as you ponder the possibilities. Of course there's cable TV, wireless high speed internet, and a DVD player.

The dining area features a table and chairs in case you want to eat inside or play a board game or work a crossword. A red and cream area rug covers part of the hardwood floor below and colorful folk art hangs on the walls. A ceiling fan whirs above while a dark wood china hutch adds the finishing touch, displaying dishes in open shelving with drawers below. The kitchen with its vaulted ceiling provides all the appliances and utensils you'd expect, bright colored walls with open shelving, ample counter space, and windows on two sides. The windows here frame an outside profusion of palms and hibiscus. If that isn't enough to delight you, double glass doors lead visually and literally from the kitchen to the spacious covered deck where you can grill up some fresh local Black Fin tuna or steak tenderloin and then enjoy a feast alfresco with family and friends at the teak dining set. Later the bubbling sound of the two-person hot tub may lure you to its indulgence.

Back up front, to the right of the front door is a hallway that leads to the bookcase-lined study. You can almost imagine a shipmaster from a past century planning his next sea adventure at the desk. The desk faces out to a large window providing ambient light and delightful views of native flora. Nearby a half-bath is tucked economically under the wooden staircase. A little beyond is the laundry area with washer and dryer.

Up the stately staircase, is a hallway decorated with art and area rugs that opens into two bedrooms, a small study, and a full bath. The master bedroom features a queen bed covered in a cloud-like down comforter, wardrobes with lots of hanging space, artisan-painted dressers with copious drawers, windows, and a glass door leading to a small deck overlooking the back garden. As with the downstairs, the windows are a special feature of the second story, providing plenty of ambient light. Tropical paddle fans create air flow and a sultry ambience as they whir above or for more cooling, turn on the air conditioning. The second bedroom likewise features a queen bed with a charming star block quilt, a seaman's trunk, hanging and drawer space, and of course the windows. Rather than here on the second floor, the third bedroom is a stand-alone structure beyond the back deck. The building historically was used as a tool shed but now has been lovingly converted into a delightful double bedroom with ensuite half bath and panel of historic window sash and glass looking out to the fish pond. The room is small and cozy with bedside tables and lamps. On one wall interesting Japanese prints continue the exotic travel theme so obvious throughout the whole residence.

Once you feel oriented to your living quarters, it's time to put on the suntan lotion and head out to explore what wonderful sights and sounds the Conch Republic has to offer. Over one block from Caroline Street, you can follow the wooden boardwalk along the Key West Historic Seaport to find tall ships offering day and sunset cruises out into the Gulf of Mexico. Or you can take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, there are all kinds: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Maybe sit under a banyan tree filled with tiny white lights at Schooner Wharf while you eat a fresh Mahi sandwich and listen to local musicians.

Walk several blocks to Duval Street to find tours, museums, shopping, more restaurants, more bars, and the Key West Aquarium where you can pet a shark if you dare. Check you cell phone for sunset time so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square where locals and visitors alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon. Be sure to applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. But it's not yet time to put your day to rest; instead hang around for the party as artists and street performers entertain the crowd still lingering in the Square. Be sure to catch Dominique and his Flying House Cats, an amazing feline troupe that jumps through hoops of fire, walks tightropes, and performs other astounding circus feats.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on our website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com and in Paradise, which comes out every Thursday.

Free delivery and set up (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival! Contact our office in advance for details.
