Description

NEW UNIT!

How do you achieve vacation relaxation in a buzzing town like Key West? Look no further than Coral Rock Retreat, a conch house that promotes a mellow sensibility while still locating you very close to every fabulous thing that's happening on the coral rock that is called Key West.

The entrance to Coral Rock Retreat is a front porch dotted with five chairs inviting you to "sit a spell" and be leisurely. Once inside the front door, the living room is to the right and a corridor with two bedrooms and two baths to the left. Chairs and a long coach sectional upholstered in tropical banana-palm print make the living room a real magnet for conversations or for watching a movie on the large screen TV. The couch, overstuffed chairs, and leather recliner promise comfort and easy viewing.

Daytimes, the room is lit in sunshine yellow from its many windows, and at night, shades supply the right measure of privacy. The art embellishments chosen for the room emphasize a sense of the tropical: a Paradise sign, a carved mermaid, an impressive seashell mirror, a seal lamp, a root coffee table with glass top, and more. Highly polished and beautiful hardwood floors are partially covered with an area rug that is both decorative and comfortable for your bare feet. Of course, there's central AC, cable, high-speed internet, the aforementioned flat-screen TV, and ceiling fans.

Between the living room and kitchen is space for one of those ever-so-convenient side tables that is not only highly decorative but also can be the perfect location for your cell phone or keys or magazine where you can always find them.

The kitchen is utterly amazing by any standards. For starters, it's very spacious and includes an eat-in table and four chairs, a separate island with four cushioned stools, and a cutout that's perfectly functional as a desk for the computer displaying recipes or email from your friends. A ceiling fan whirs overhead, an area rug adds color to the tile floor, and windows provide soft ambient light.

Frigidaire stainless steel appliances, two gas stoves, two stainless sinks, long lengths of granite countertops, two microwaves, two ovens, and a myriad of cherry wood cabinets above and below make this a kitchen perfectly suited for a serious chef. On one wall of the kitchen is the back door, which opens to stands of palm trees, space for off-street parking, and plenty of space left over to enjoy BBQing out in the open. There is a large waterfront pool less than a block away at Dante's Key West Pool Bar & Restaurant. There is no charge for the pool if you actively eat or drink while there.

Back inside and to the left of the front door is the corridor with two bedrooms, one a queen bed and one a full bed. Both bedrooms provide lighting and space for the hanging items and for folded items you brought along. Each downstairs bedroom has an accompanying full bath. One bath also houses a highly rated Samsung stacked washer/dryer. Up a flight of stairs brings you directly into one open queen bedroom and one full bath. One must go through this bedroom to reach another queen bedroom.

When you're ready to explore the island, the location of Coral Rock Retreat makes it so easy. You can walk or bike or take a pedicab to all the important spots on the island. Almost immediately to the left is an island favorite-chef-owned and operated Azure Mediterranean restaurant serving up a great breakfast, lunch, and dinner at inside tables or on the shaded patio. Down a bit further is 5 Brothers Grocery and Sandwich Shop, a casual corner market famous for its sandwiches and Cuban coffee. Almost any time of day, you'll see locals sitting on wooden benches outside, talking and enjoying their lunch.

To the right, maybe a block and a half, is the Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises. Or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and more. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don't miss the Raw Bar, the Boathouse, and Schooner Wharf, where you can eat a fresh Mahi sandwich or Conch Fritters under a banyan tree. Or walk on down to find more equally as enticing food spots and watering holes.

In a few more blocks you're on Duval, where you'll find access to tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. There are always plenty of cultural activities such as live music, art exhibitions, and plays. Perhaps catch a movie on one of the four screens at the Tropic Cinema. Or stop in at Books & Books to catch a glimpse of the author Judy Blume stocking the shelves.

If you like beaches, one local's favorite is Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. Bathrooms, showers, a snack bar, and picnic tables are also available. Or maybe you'll decide to skip the beach to explore the adjacent Civil War-era fort, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the world-famous celebration at Mallory Square. Be there as locals and visitors alike gather seven days a week, 365 days a year, to witness the sun sinking into the horizon. Be sure to applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. If you're lucky, maybe you'll see the elusive "green flash" and claim the bragging rights for years to come. Then stick around as artists and street performers entertain the enthusiastic crowd with performing cats, fire eaters, musicians, fortune tellers, etc.

If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook from Books & Books on Eaton Street or a stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street will help make sure you don't miss anything. To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events. Other info on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section).
