Description

JANUARY / FEBRUARY Still Open!

Without a doubt, this vacation-defining residence will become as much a part of your holiday memories as the island of Key West itself. Its two-story classic Conch architecture, centrally located in Old Town, includes two spacious master bedrooms, two full en-suite baths, one half bath, a large guest cottage, a tropical pool and deck oasis, and covered parking. Chances are good-very good-that you'll never want to leave.

What matters most to most visitors is the deck and pool area of their warm-weather vacation rental. This one meets the most basic need for outside recreation and time in the sun. But more importantly, it also satisfies an indulgent desire for beauty and comfort. Out any of four glass French doors at the back of the first floor, you can step onto the expansive deck. To the left is a seriously stunning pool and spa with coral rock waterfall. Its perimeter of verdant palms creates privacy and even some shade at certain times of the day. Mostly, though, the swaying fronds cast little pinpoint shadows over the dazzling turquoise water. To the right is a table and chairs with shade umbrella, four chaise lounges inviting you to stretch out, and nearby, you'll find an outside shower and BBQ grill. Here and there terracotta pots hold Birds of Paradise and other lush plants highlighted by landscape lighting. The scene is perfect for meditative time alone or for a later afternoon pool party.

And if all that weren't enough, there's also a delightful guest cottage to the far right. It couldn't be more conveniently integrated into the scene. To start with, two of its three doors open right onto the deck. Inside are a comfortably appointed study/daybed room, hallway, and queen bedroom with a large en-suite full bath. The Dade County pine walls and vaulted ceilings add to the sense of spaciousness and class.

Back in the main house, it's a tale of two stories. On the first, the open floor plan stretches in a wide sweep from the dining room into the living room with the kitchen to the right. The dining table and chairs for eight are near the wall of French doors delineating the house from the deck. With this positioning, the light and view become one of the organic aspects of the décor throughout the house.

To the right of the dining area, the spectacular kitchen includes topline appliances, TV, handsome hardwood cabinets above and below for storage, and a handy double Sub-Zero beverage cooling drawer. The granite counter space and island with sink and disposal provide ample space for preparing a meal should you be so inspired. A powder room is conveniently just around the corner.

The living room is arranged with two casual yet chic slipcover couches around a glass-top coffee table. The subliminal message is "relax here." A leather rhino peeks around a corner of one couch. An antique armoire hides TV and stereo equipment, and ceiling fans whir noiselessly above. Of course there's cable, high-speed Internet, stereo, DVD, and central AC. Ceiling spots and windows on two walls light the room pleasantly day or night. Two armchairs provide even more seating should you want to pull them up to the leather backgammon table.

Up a flight of oak stairs with a highly polished bannister are the two master bedrooms, each with vaulted ceilings, ceiling fans, and large en-suite baths. Both provide generous walk-in closets and dressers with copious drawer space. Everything is appointed in rich furnishings that include plush, pile-woven area rugs over natural oak floors. Striking large-format contemporary art creates an interesting counterpoint to classic earthen pots and dark wood furniture. The front queen bedroom includes a large balcony overlooking the tree-lined street, and the back king bedroom includes a smaller balcony overlooking the pool and deck below. Between the two is a washer/dryer closet with plenty of shelf space for laundry supplies.

When you're unpacked and ready to explore, you'll be delighted to find your location is central to everything America's only Caribbean island has to offer. You're four blocks from the middle of Duval. Turn left to find the Atlantic side of the island and right to find the Historic Seaport and Gulf of Mexico. Either way you'll encounter the must-see attractions that your guidebook told you about: beaches, tours, museums, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you're interested in watersports, all kinds await you: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few.

Don't miss visiting the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, Hemingway's House, the Light House Museum, and the Little White House. Maybe have your picture taken at the Southernmost Point or with a shark at the Aquarium. Be sure to set a reminder on your cell phone so you don't miss the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon. If you're into art, the island offers live music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.
