Description

Everyone and everything in Key West goes at its own speed, a wonderfully decelerated, human-friendly pace. Locals call it "island time." It's no accident that this beautifully restored 19th century home with four bedrooms and two full baths is named "Island Time" in honor of that low-key feeling. There's nothing to worry about here-the location is perfect and all the amenities you need are provided. From your front porch or from the full balcony above you can savor your tree-lined Old Town neighborhood. Or even better, stretch out on the comfy wicker furniture overlooking the private pool and waterfall at the rear of the residence. A canopy of deep green palms and a tall wooden fence make this the ideal place to sink into deep relaxation mode.

(During Shoulder and Off Season this home may be rented as a Three (3) bedroom / 3 bath only. Rates for use as a three bedroom are comparable to our Casa Angelina 3 bedroom property. Please see that page for rates or contact our office for details.)

For most visitors, the outside deck and pool area says "vacation" more than anything else. The deck, pool, waterfall, and outside shower at Island Time provide it all. Step through double glass doors from the kitchen onto an expansive deck. The first thing you'll notice are the sun-dappled palms and the blue water of the pool beyond. Besides this glorious view, the deck offers a large gas grill and plenty of wicker and pillow seating centered around a wicker coffee table. Above is a triangular shade sail creating the perfect location for morning coffee or late afternoon cocktails.

As you look out from the deck, your eyes and ears tune to the soothing sound of water falling into the pool from the delightful water feature in the wall above the pool. Temperature-controlled pool jets create ripples while water birds and puffy white clouds glide above. Maybe you'll decide to go for a dip and then shower off in the enclosed outside shower conveniently located to the right of the pool. Also outside, from security locked gates off the side of the house, you'll find a second entrance to the pool area and a separate security entrance to a large storage area perfect for bikes or other sporting equipment you might decide to rent during your stay.

When you're ready to enjoy the inside of Island Time, go back through those double glass doors into the generous-sized kitchen. A window over the double sink opens wide to the deck, letting in breezes and natural light. The countertops are stone and ring the kitchen in an L shape. A totally functional Wedgewood stove, an original from the 1950s, stands in the middle of one wall with a whimsical "Beach House" sign above it as reminder that you are on North America's only living coral reef. A washer and dryer sit next to the refrigerator, making laundry time very easy to incorporate into the day's activities without any bother. The room is rectangular and spacious enough to also allow for a charming farm-house table and stools in the middle. The table top and shelves are butcher-block style and can be used for eating or as an extension of the counter when preparing a meal. Classic hardwood floors here stretch throughout the house.

Next to the kitchen is the dining area. A chandelier hangs above the glass-top dining table with four swivel wicker chairs-the perfect setting for a meal or board game like Scrabble. A bookcase and desk are to the left and an antique Asian cabinet to the right. This space is adjacent and open to the living area. In fact standing at the front door, there's an open view through the living room, dining room, and kitchen to the outside deck and pool. That coupled with the many windows throughout the historic home creates the sense of living outside and inside at the same time.

The living room area features a deep-seated arm chair, ottoman, and matching couch with colorful accent pillows. These comfortable seating options are centered around an area rug and glass-top coffee table. A chest holding a flatscreen TV is positioned nearby for easy viewing of your favorite movie or series. Of course there's cable, high-speed internet, stereo, DVD player, and central AC.

Still on the first floor is a large queen bedroom with plenty of closet and drawer storage, a flatscreen TV, and a full bath. Ascending a carpeted staircase to the second floor brings you to yet more sleeping options: a king bedroom and across the hall, a full bedroom. Both offer plenty of closet and drawer space. Between the two is the door to the balcony that runs the whole width of the house. Sit in the Adirondack-style chairs provided to enjoy your tree-top view and breezes from the nearby Gulf of Mexico. The second floor also offers a generous bath with claw foot tub (no shower). And at the end of the hall, there's the bunk room with a bunk bed and a full futon sofa. These rooms and other walls in the home feature the historic and prized Dade County pine.

When you're ready to explore the Key West, you'll find that Island Time offers an ideal location. You'll want to head over a block to Key West's Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, there's all kinds like diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor.

From the seaport, the world-famous Duval Street is only several blocks away. Whether you're interested in history, architecture, unusual flora and fauna, or the myriad of opportunities to have fun, it's all along Duval's two-mile span from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic. Unless you're been to the island before, pick up a guide book to insure you don't miss anything like the island's vibrant art and culture scene with live music, lectures, plays, movies, art galleries, and artists' talks. Be sure to catch the sunset celebration nightly at Mallory Square.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.
