NEW UNIT!

Quintessentially Key West in terms of location and architecture, La Buena Vida won't disappoint as your next vacation rental. In fact, you'll be delighted. The location is Old Town's Bahama Village, an artsy and cultural quarter offering some of the best attractions and restaurants on the island. Its architecture, centering around an open courtyard oasis with a cocktail pool, provides a seamless mix of the outdoor/indoor living so desirable in a Caribbean climate.

One block off Duval, on a quiet street, a picket fence opens into a brick courtyard ringed in colorful Bougainvillea and palm landscaping. Behind the magenta and green flora stands an ocean-blue, two-story cottage with distinctive Bahamian shutters. Its front yard not only beautifully frames the house, it provides gated, off-street parking where you can leave your car and forget about it for a while.

The property contains three structures: what you might call an intriguing tropical campus. The front cottage includes the kitchen and living room. Upstairs is the master bedroom and bath. The back cottage serves as the second bedroom or guestroom and second full bath. In between is a courtyard oasis with a covered dining area and a sparkling cocktail pool. Behind is the third structure set up as the perfect office or artist's studio. Between these two is a delightful outdoor shower you won't be able to resist.

Just inside the front door of the main cottage, the view is of a stairway to the right and a wall of French doors straight ahead. In between is a delightful, well-appointed galley kitchen with everything you could need to meet your culinary needs. In a town famous for its bars and restaurants, that might be just warming up leftovers from an exquisite meal out the night before. Or you might decide to prepare a gourmet meal or grill some local fish and veggies on the gas BBQ. A ceiling fixture supplies illumination, helped by arty pendant lights over the counter and a window between the refrigerator and pantry cabinet. Cupboards above and below harbor glasses, dishes, and pans. A woven rug over the hardwood floor adds to the décor and cushions the kitchen workspace.

Of course, there's central AC, high-speed internet, and cable TV at your fingertips. Ceiling fans throughout circulate air and add a touch of beauty and style. Beyond the kitchen is a small living room with a big plus-those aforementioned French doors. With the doors flung open, it feels like the cocktail pool is your private retreat. And it is. Take a dip in your swimsuit or something less. Outside to the left is the covered outdoor dining for those warmed leftovers or grilled grouper. A wooden table seats six. A hammered pendant lamp above provides lighting for post-sunset or pre-sunrise meals or just a friendly game of cards any time of day.

Upstairs, above the kitchen and living room, is the master bedroom with queen bed and full bath. Next to the bathroom is a dressing room with shelves, bench, and window. Echoing the downstairs, here you'll also find French doors. These open to a balcony overlooking the pool and provide picturesque views of the historic Key West lighthouse. This is an ideal place to read a good book or to enjoy a morning coffee or evening cocktail.

Across the courtyard from the front house and pool area is the second bungalow, which offers a queen bed, full bath, and laundry facilities. A chest of drawers, two woven light shades, and a throw pillow announcing the street address round out the suite. The motif of French doors comes into play for the third time, opening to the pool area. With all the doors open, the residence's ambiance is almost more outside than in.
Behind this cottage is a charming outside shower finished in colorful tiles of palm trees and crustacea. Just beyond is the final structure, an enclosure that could serve as office or an artist's studio.

At some point, you'll want to check out your Whitehead Street neighborhood and the rest of Key West. The residence is steps from the Southernmost Buoy, the most photographed spot on the island. Petronia and the surrounding streets house some of the most famous restaurants in town: Moondog, Blue Heaven, Bad Boy Burrito, and Santiago's Bodega, to name a few. At some point, a tour of Hemingway's estate to visit the famous six-toe cats is in order. Or climb to the top of the Key West lighthouse (remember, you can see this from your master bedroom) for a spectacular island view.

Walk a block up to Duval. A right turn points you toward the Atlantic and a left toward the Gulf of Mexico. In between are all the things that make the Conch Republic so famous: beaches, tours, museums, water sports, shopping, over two hundred restaurants, bars, and the Key West Aquarium, where you can pet a shark if you dare. Everything is within walking or biking distance, even the Truman Waterfront Park and the pre-Civil War era fortress and beach at Fort Zachery Taylor. Or catch a ride there on the Duval Loop, a free bus.

Most tourists say you haven't "done" Key West unless you've been to the daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to watch and applaud as the sun sinks into the Gulf of Mexico. Then stick around to party on the dock with local musicians, street performers, art vendors, jewelry vendors, and food and drink carts.

If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street will help make sure you don't miss anything. To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events page at http://www.historichideaways.com/key-west-events/. Other info on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday in the Key West Citizen.

Free delivery and setup (over $50) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.
