There's something special about the kind of comfortable living afforded by this four bedroom, 2.5-bath, single-family home designated as "Lady Emma." The house takes its name from the street it inhabits, one of the most desirable addresses in town. It's part of Truman Annex, an award-winning development on the grounds of the historically significant Key West Naval Station. The location is unbelievably quiet and secluded, yet only a few blocks from Duval and everything this island community is famous and infamous for.

A palm-tree-lined street, white picket fence and gate, a bricked-in walkway meandering among professionally landscaped gardens, and a front porch complete with two wicker chairs are the preview to this beautifully maintained two-story home. Once inside, the kitchen is to the right and a bedroom to the left. This bedroom, like all of the house, is full of ambient light. It has a queen bed and closet. The well-planned kitchen opens in one direction to a delightful outside brick patio with teak table, four chairs, and gas BBQ grill. It opens in another direction to the inside dining area.

The roomy kitchen itself couldn't be more perfect for whatever your intentions, whether that be to warm some luscious leftovers from one of Key West's excellent restaurants or prepare a four-course meal yourself featuring local-caught grouper or yellowtail snapper on the grill. The focal point of the kitchen is a large window with three artisan pendant lights over the double sink. Above is a three-blade ceiling fan and light. Below are generous counter space and stainless appliances. Plenty of cupboards are included above and below, so everything you're not using can be easily stored out of sight and out of the way.

Through the doorway to the left of the kitchen, you can see the dining area, living area, and get a peek at the back patio and pool. The table and chairs seat six with a six-light chandelier adding light and décor from above. Conveniently located nearby is the guest half-bath. The living area is nicely appointed with a three-seat couch and a two-seat couch in ocean blue plus a cushioned armchair. All are located for easy viewing of a large flatscreen TV. Of course, there's high-speed internet, central air, and cable. A throw pillow advises RELAX, and you can tell from looking that that's just what this area is perfect for.

So far, so very good, but the best is yet to come. The most prized area of the whole fabulous living space is just beyond the louvered French doors. A covered wood deck offers cushioned chaise lounges and a teak table and chairs that provide yet another spot for cocktails and conversation, a meal, or a game of cards. And the area offers a view of and access to the outstanding pool oasis. The pool is large, kidney-shaped, and surrounded by beautiful rock and tropical foliage as well as the continuation of the white picket fence that began at the front of the residence. The water is temperature controlled and reflects the incredible blue of Key West skies with a now-and-again shadow of a passing white puffy cloud or gliding pelican. Behind the pool and through the picket fence is a designated parking area for the car you may have brought or rented but will seldom use on this get-everywhere-by-walking-or-biking island.

Back inside, a stately hardwood staircase leads up to the second level bedrooms. Here there's a choice of the master bedroom with king bed and en-suite full bath, a queen bedroom, or the third bedroom with two twin beds that can convert to a king bed. The spacious master has a wall of windows that look out over the picturesque pool and deck below. The second full bath is in the hall. This level also features a washer/dryer. There's plenty of closet space for your hanging items and chests of drawers for your folded accoutrements. As with the downstairs, every space is nicely appointed.

Although it might be hard to imagine leaving Lady Emma, it's also impossible not to succumb to the allure of the rest of Key West. World-famous Duval Street is only two blocks away. From Lady Emma, stroll through the manicured landscaping, verdant palms, and interconnecting pathways that give the Truman Annex neighborhood its park-like atmosphere. Then head out through the wrought iron privacy gate to find yourself in the midst of Duval's tourist attractions: tours, museums, shopping, bars, and restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you're interested in watersports, the Historic Seaport offers all kinds: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few. Don't miss the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon. Afterward, stick around for the festivities that follow.

Maybe your taste runs more towards the arts. If so, you're in the right place for music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, and more. If you like beaches, your accommodations are close to a favorite locals' beach, Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. Bathrooms, showers, a snack bar, and picnic tables are also available. Or maybe you'll decide to skip the beach in favor of exploring the adjacent Civil War-era fort, which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.
