Description

Poinciana House, a one-bedroom, two-full bath conch cottage, is a standout in authentic Florida design and guest friendliness. The private pool area and tropical garden is where you find the namesake Royal Poinciana tree complete with a chair hammock beckoning from one enormous branch. Swinging back and forth, you can almost hear strains of the 1930s classic song "Poinciana" (the song of the trees). Another compelling feature of the cottage is its location just a half block from the Ernest Hemingway house and from Duval Street, the main artery for all that fun stuff you came to Key West to enjoy.

As typical in Key West, the cottage architecture takes full advantage of the sundrenched weather with a rear covered patio, private heated pool, outdoor shower, side patio, and second floor sundeck. The rear patio is generous and defined by redwood planking underfoot and a roof overhead. It's dotted with patio furniture including the perfect dinner spot, a wicker dining table and matching chairs. Maybe the setting will inspire you to barbecue something savory at the gas grill and enjoy eating it al fresco here.

Two steps down puts you at the edge of the dramatic L-shaped lagoon pool, which extends across the rear of the cottage and up the left side swimming lane, ending at a hidden conversation area off the front bedroom. Linger near the pool's jets, swim laps, or just paddle around to refresh. A fourth option is ascending a spiral staircase to the sundeck overlooking the pool, where you'll find chaise lounges and plenty of tanning space.

Poinciana House is demarcated from Olivia Street by an off-street parking area and a white picket fence. Inside the fenced perimeter is a front garden that leads to the front porch. Get out your camera because one garden feature is an amazing banyan tree with multiple external roots, extensive branching, and large leaves. The cottage front door opens into a bedroom suite with a queen bed, sitting area, bath, and generous closet space for folded and hanging travel attire. But best of all, one wall is composed of glass French doors that lead to a private outside conversation area perfect for enjoying a cup of morning coffee in your PJs. In case you brought the kids or expect guests, more sleeping areas include an open space adjacent to the kitchen with a full platform bed and a pull out queen futon in the living room.

The kitchen is painted cloud white with wood accents and has all the appliances you'll need to cook a meal or just microwave some yummy leftovers. There's plenty of counter space and windows at every turn. One arm of the counter does double duty as an eat-at bar with stools. Sunshine yellow walls, a hanging wine rack, and hardwood floors complete the perfect picture. Across from the kitchen is the second full bath done in dramatic black and white decor.

The next rectangular area encompasses the living and dining area. Two couches the fire-orange color of a blooming Poinciana tree provide plenty of comfortable seating for watching TV or enjoying the company of friends and family. During daytime this area is flooded with natural light from the wall of French doors leading to the deck and pool area. Adjacent to the living area is the inside dining area, which includes a round table with four upholstered chairs. So many choices-eat at the breakfast bar, eat here, or eat on the covered patio. You could even take snacks and drinks up to enjoy on the sundeck that feels a bit like a tree house. Of course there's also cable, wireless high-speed Internet, and a DVD player.

Or maybe you'd rather eat out at one of Key West's over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. You can decide as you explore Whitehead Street and the Southernmost Point marker. Or walk half a block in the other direction to find Duval, which runs the width of the island from the Gulf of Mexico to a pier jutting out into the wide Atlantic Ocean. If you want to buy a silly T-shirt or have your picture taken with an Elvis-look-alike, Duval is the street. It also offers opportunities for tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and eateries.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

"Heaven on earth"

5 of 5

Loved the location. Loved the fact that we were so close to everything we love about Key West, shops, restaurants, the Hemingway House, and the six-toed cats.Loved having a private pool and the feel of privacy. Loved the Iguana family in the tree on the back of the property...very entertaining. We even loved the roosters and chickens. Nothing we didn't love.I will click yes to recommend this rental property because I cannot tell a lie...sure hope that doesn't mean it will get so booked up that I can't rent it next time.

"Great location"

5 of 5

Great location and private pool. Easy walking distance to all restaurants and shops and beach. We had a car but found we only used it on two occasions. Right off the main street but fair enough from the party areas.

"Visitor"

5 of 5

This place is a slice of heaven. Adorable from the front and even better in the back. Covered porch and pool in the backyard along with a grill and outdoor shower. Three houses off of Duval, but you'd never know it by the noise level. Only thing we heard was roosters. Can't wait to go back to this beautiful home. You will not be disappointed renting this home

"Perfect in Every Way, but Location for Us"

5 of 5

We stayed for a week, and absolutely loved this little cottage, though we really only used the back half of it. The house is steps away from the side gate of Hemingway House and the Six Toed Cat cafe. We had bicycles delivered there by Eaton Bikes, and found we really needed them to get to the places we tend to spend the most time at in Key West. The house is divided into two parts with a door between. The front room, which has the bedroom, a nice sitting area, very tiny TV and full bath, and the "great room" which has another bed, hidden behind a counter, a nicely furnished kitchen area, a dining table, another full bath, a larger sitting area with loveseats, a recliner and another TV. There are blinds on all the windows for privacy. The great room has French doors that open onto the covered terrace and large (for Key West) pool, with a lap lane running down the side of the property. There is a "sunning porch" on the roof of the terrace, with a spiral stair that leads up to it. Note: the Pool Man showed up while we were still in bed Monday morning, and before he left, I asked when hed be back Thursday so we could be sure to have the blinds drawn that morning as well. He gets there at around 8 am. He was very quiet and I almost didnt realize he was there, except I saw movement outside just before I stepped onto the terrace, au naturel. We've previously noted that shaded swimming pools are rather chilly to enjoy in October, so we paid the fee to have the pool heated during our stay. That was the best choice we could have made. We used the pool daily, and more. Not bothering with suits because of the privacy fencing. The one issue we noted was that the air conditioner for the larger great room wasn't quite as effective for the large space, as we would have liked, but it did reduce the worst of the heat and humidity for the area. I moved a side table that was in front of the window unit when we arrived, which seemed to help. Nevertheless, we spent most of our down time at the cottage, relaxing at the table on the terrace. Enjoying coffee and catching up online, or in the pool. On a couple afternoons, we could hear the residents of an apartment, Top of Duval, behind the cottage, enjoying their pool/outdoor space. But it didn't last too long and was no more disturbing than neighbors at home would be. Another locals apartment overlooks the terrace from the side, but we noted that it was empty during the day, and blinds were drawn at night. On our last night (Saturday), there was a band playing at Bogarts, on the outside terrace of the Casablanca Hotel. The acoustics between buildings funneled the amplified music right out onto Olivia St. We could hear it loud and clear in our front bedroom, and out on our terrace, but it was less loud in the great room. We were closer to the Southernmost Point than in previous years, so we did explore more places at that end of the island than we have in the past. After returning home, we realized that we ended up being less spur of the moment, when we went to the north end of town. We'd make a plan to hit this and this and this place, before returning. When we stayed off Ann St. we'd wander here and there, then back to the cottage, then go out and come back. Navigating the gate with a bicycle took a bit of practice, and it was easy keep our bikes behind the locked side gate, so we didn't have to fuss with cables and locks once "home."That said, it was always marvelous to return and have a dip in the pool on a hot afternoon. Poincianna House is perfect for a couple. Or it would also work well for two couples who were very good friends. They'd be best served to choose sleeping spots based on who wakes up earliest. Those folks should take the great room bed. The house isn't new, and walking in, you definitely notice that "Florida smell" but this isn't a high end hotel, it is a restored, old home. For folks who want to be at the southern end of Duval, Poinciana House is a gem, for those wanting to be closer to The Square, not so much. You've got to weigh priorities. Weve learned that to get a cottage with a private pool, there really isnt anything available nearer to the north side of the island. We loved this little cottage.

"Awesome"

5 of 5

The house was just as Historic Hideaways pictured and described...beautiful. The house was very clean, a pool service came twice a week to clean the pool and Tim, (agent) was very informative and helpful. Everything was supplied from towels to suntan lotion. There was nothing we needed to bring except our clothes & food. I would definitely stay here again.

"Awesome home in a beautiful setting"

5 of 5

We spent 10 days in this property and hated to leave. So conveniently located, yet you felt like you were pretty much away from the rest of the world. The home was built in 1929 and remodeled, yet the owner retained some of the charm of an older home. The grounds were well maintained and beautiful. We found the house to be stocked with everything that we needed when we arrived. We so enjoyed the pool!! Anytime we would go out on an excursion, we would look at each other and say "let's go back to the house for awhile!" Tim was friendly and wonderful to work with as our booking agent. Even though this home does have 2 queen beds, I think you would have to choose a couple that you know extremely well if you would want to rent this home with another couple. We can't wait to go back~will definitely rent this home again!

"Paradise right near everything!"

5 of 5

The pictures aren't misleading - this place is fantastic! I felt as though I spent a week in paradise. We spent much of our time on the pool and porch during the day and went up to the rooftop to watch the stars at night. Although you're right near "everything," you feel that you have privacy because of the fence around the property. I definitely would stay there again.

"Perfect!"

We loved this rental home. The pool and upper deck are worth it alone. Very spacious for two. Close to everything, very centrally located off Duval.

"Key West sanctuary"

5 of 5

I will just cut to the chase; I have already booked the sanctuary for November 2014. I have stayed at other nice places in KW but I love the privacy of the village, the house with private pool and upper deck, and the yard shared only with the wildlife. If you do not care for green iguanas, small aggressive lizards, roosters crowing at all hours, birds, tropical trees and flowers, and locals in the village than this may not be the place for you. This is becoming one of the last areas that has not lost the charm of a Key West lost. I did not want for anything. Easy check-in/out, Tim and Wade were very accomodating, and location, location, location. My home away from home.

"A Slice of Heaven!"

5 of 5

My husband and I decided to rent this vacation rental for 7 days, and it was worth every penny! We have been to Key West a few times before, but this was by far the best stay. The heart of the house is the backyard oasis which IS as amazing as the pictures show. We spent countless hours lounging in the shade on the deck, swimming in the gorgeous (pristine!) pool or lounging in the one person hammock chair. We travel all over from Europe to the Caribbean but this was by-far one of the most relaxing trips we've ever done. Not to mention, we parked our car on day 1 and didn't start it up again until 7 days later. We walked a few steps out the front door and you're literally on Duval Street!! Simply amazing. We will definitely be returning to vacation rentals with Historic Hideaways and the Poinciana House again!

"When are we going back."

5 of 5

The house was very comfortable. Grandson loved the pool. Enjoyed the daily visit of the iguana in the tree. We really liked the location, it was quiet and enjoyable. We hope to make this trip again!

"Puts you in a Key West state of mind"

5 of 5

There were 3 of us and while just a tad small, the house was perfect. We are still missing coffee by the pool, walking less than a block to Duval Street, and enjoying all the wonderful restaurants. We can still hear the roosters crowing! The house was private, comfortable, and a cool respite from the heat. We loved it!

-PMo3876 on 06/23/2014

"Super convenient!"

5 of 5

We loved our week stay at the poinciana house! First of all the company was very easy to rent from. Very quick to get back with me when I had any questions. We had no issues with the house at all. The pictures reflected the house perfectly! We absolutely loved the pool and the roof top deck. On top of everything it was super convenient and walking distance to everything! We will definitely be back!

"Hideaway heaven!"

5 of 5

This was our second visit to Key West in 2 years and we could not have asked for a better stay! The weather (albeit seasonal) was alittle chilly. Tim @ Historic Hideaways made our rental experience carefree and the Poinciana House was exactly as advertised - the pool was unbelieveably serene, well-maintained and the perfect temperature. More bath towels than the 2 of us needed and plenty of beach towels if only the weather had cooperated. The location was perfect and central to all of our favorites - Blue Heaven, Ft Zachary Beach, and convenience stores were all within a block or two. Would not hesitate to consider Historic Hideaways for a future stay - hopefully soon!

"Great tropical backyard"

4 of 5

The location of this house is perfect two houses off Duvall, we walked to everything. The house is cute more for a couple or family of four, whereas the way the beds are set up there is no privacy so it was perfect for the two of us. We loved the backyard it was a romantic oasis. The pool is fabulous we spent a lot of time in that backyard, starting with coffee in morning and sipping cocktails in the afternoon, it's also nice for a late night swim. You do have to go on the rooftop for sunning but there are lounge chairs and electricity if you want to plug your music in. Plenty of beach towels and bath towels. Kitchen had everything you need and grocery and liquor stores are close by. The chickens/roosters are abnoxiuos but you get used to it. We enjoyed our stay!
