Description

Old Key West style defines this charming Bahamian Colonial studio hidden away on Rose Lane, which runs only one block from Simonton to Duval. The building right next door on Simonton, Casa Antigua, was Hemingway's first island residence, where in 1928 he wrote Farewell to Arms. Going the other way, the lane intersects with Duval, the island's main artery for entertainment. For example, right where Rose Lane meets Duval, you'll find Fat Tuesday and the Hard Rock Cafe, both known for colorful, frothy drinks. Directly across the street is Caroline's Cafe, rumored to have been named for Jimmy Buffett's song "Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street."

Despite the proximity to the hubbub of Duval, once inside Rose Cottage you'll find total quiet and privacy. As one guest put it, "One block to Duval, yet we didn't hear any of the noise or craziness when we were in the cottage or out by the pool. This is a special little place." The outside and inside is constructed of classic Dade County Pine, some whitewashed and some left natural. From the front door, you look straight past the sleeping and dining/kitchen areas through a wall of glass doors to an amazing open air patio with dipping pool. The multilevel deck provides varying degrees of sun and shade. It includes a sitting area, a tropical garden, barbeque, and of course the pool. If you, like most visitors, came to Key West to enjoy its amazing weather, outside is where you'll spend most of your time. Here you can lounge, sun, read, dip in the pool, maybe grill something savory for lunch or dinner. You might share the pool occasionally when the owners are in town and staying upstairs, but mostly this is a very private area.

Back inside the cottage, the main living area is an open floor plan with tropical ceiling fans above and plenty of natural light from windows and glass doors. The large sleeping area invites you with its king bed embellished with plenty of fluffy pillows and, nearby, a chest of drawers to hold your travel wear and gear. There's also a floor-length closet for the clothes you want to hang. Of course there's ceiling fans, cable TV, wireless high-speed Internet, and a DVD player.

To the right is a door that opens into a generous full bath with two windows and dramatic blue and gold floor tiles. The full size washer and dryer are tucked into one corner across from which you'll find a linen closet stuffed with velvety towels and other bath items. The rest of that wall is the shower tub.

The compact and delightful country kitchen provides what you need if you decide to cook at home: counter space, stove, microwave, pots and pans, all illuminated with track lighting and sunshine. One turn to the right puts you at cafe table with four chairs. An artisan sideboard next to the refrigerator adds color and function and a bit of quaintness to the kitchen/dining area. The walls are painted a sunny yellow and reflect the glow from the American hardwood floors.

After you've explored Rose Cottage, unpacked, and put on your shorts and flip-flops, you're ready to explore Duval and beyond. Leave your car in the off-street parking provided because you can reach everything by foot or bicycle. Duval runs the fourteen-block width of the island from the Gulf of Mexico to a pier jutting out into the wide Atlantic Ocean. This street offers much of what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. After sightseeing and lunch, maybe you'll want to pop back to Rose Cottage for a cooling dip in the pool and afterward a siesta on one of the deck lounge chairs. Before you doze off, set your alarm for near sunset hour. For sure you'll want to be at Mallory Square to applaud as the sun sets over the Gulf and outer islands. Once in a while you'll be lucky enough to glimpse a brilliant green flash at the exact moment the orange ball of the sun disappears. Hang around for the after-party as artists and street performers entertain the crowd.

To see what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $50) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the office in advance for details.
