Description

NEW UNIT!

If you want to engage with Key West's past and be perfectly positioned to take advantage of its present, Rose Haven is the ideal vacation residence. The charming, open floor plan studio with queen bed, full bath, private garden with pool, and off-street parking nods to the past in that it's located next door to Casa Antigua where Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms. And the residence offers the present just steps away on Duval Street, the island's main artery for entertainment. In fact, part of the historic charm and notoriety of Rose Lane is that, unlike most lanes on the island, it runs only one short block, from Simonton to Duval.

Despite the proximity to Duval, Rose Haven offers a therapeutic kind of quiet and privacy throughout. From the front door, the view is straight through past the sleeping and dining/kitchen areas, past a wall of glass doors to a beautiful tropical garden oasis. The multilevel deck provides varying degrees of sun and shade. It includes a sitting area with table and market umbrella, tropical foliage, and of course, the most delightful pool. Here you can lounge, sun, read, dip in the pool, and take advantage of the outside shower. Maybe you'll be motivated to cook something savory for lunch or dinner and serve it at the nearby table. Or warm leftovers from dinner out the night before and serve them on the deck. Key Westers pride themselves on living more outdoors than indoors and rightly so considering the world-class weather and plethora of outside events and activities.

Back inside the cottage, the main living area is a joyful open floor plan with ceiling fans above and plenty of natural light from windows and glass doors. The large sleeping area is inviting with its comfy queen bed embellished with plenty of fluffy pillows. Nightstands on either side hold lamps and anything else you want at hand like the remote for the TV or your phone. Nearby a chest of drawers stands ready to hold your folded travel wear and gear. There's also a floor-length closet for the clothes you want to hang. Of course, there are ceiling fans, cable TV, wireless high-speed Internet, and in-window AC. The TV is conveniently situated for comfortable viewing from the bed.

To the right is a door that opens into a generous full bath with two windows and dramatic blue and gold floor tiles. The washer and dryer are conveniently tucked into one corner of the bath across near a linen closet stuffed with velvety towels and other bath items. The rest of that wall is the shower tub.

Track lighting and sunshine provide the illumination for the country kitchen/dining area with its counter space, stove, microwave, and all the cooking utensils you could need. Plenty of cabinets above and below the sink provide storage so everything can be out of sight. One pivot puts you at a table with dining chairs. An artisan sideboard next to the refrigerator adds color and function and a bit of quaintness. The walls are painted a sunny yellow and reflect the warm glow from the Dade County pine walls and American hardwood floors.

Down Rose Lane, it's less than a block to Duval at whose corner you'll find Fat Tuesday and the Hard Rock Cafe, both known for colorful, frothy drinks. Directly across the street is Caroline's Cafe, rumored to have been named for Jimmy Buffett's song "Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street." Duval runs the fourteen-block width of the island from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. In between, you'll find access to tours, museums, galleries, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. Plenty of cultural activities such as live music, art exhibitions, and plays are also plentiful. Perhaps catch a movie on one of the four screens at the Tropic Cinema. Or stop in at Books & Books to catch a glimpse of the author Judy Blume stocking the shelves.

Be sure to check out Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises. Or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, jet-skiing, and more. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don't miss the Raw Bar, the Boathouse, and Schooner Wharf, where you can eat a fresh Mahi sandwich or Conch Fritters under a banyan tree. Or walk on down to find more equally as enticing food spots and watering holes.

If you like beaches, one local's favorite is Fort Zachery Taylor, where you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and snorkeling equipment. Bathrooms, showers, a snack bar, and picnic tables are also available. Or maybe you'll decide to skip the beach to explore the adjacent Civil War-era fort, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the world-famous celebration at Mallory Square. Be there as locals and visitors alike gather seven days a week, 365 days a year, to witness the sun sinking into the horizon. Be sure to applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. If you're lucky, maybe you'll see the elusive "green flash" and claim the bragging rights for years to come. Then stick around as artists and street performers entertain the enthusiastic crowd with performing cats, fire eaters, musicians, fortune tellers, etc.

If this is your first trip to the Conch Republic, a guidebook from Books & Books on Eaton Street or a stop at the Chamber of Commerce Information Center on Greene Street will help make sure you don't miss anything. To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events. Other info on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section).
