Description

Vacation connoisseurs agree that the most important element of a truly memorable trip is the housing you choose. This three-bedroom, two-full-bath home in the heart of Old Town makes the perfect first decision for an unforgettable Key West experience. The residence-aptly dubbed "Serenity Now"-provides privacy, contemporary design, and a beautiful custom-built, temperature-controlled pool. The location next to the Historic Seaport makes it ever so easy to enjoy the Gulf of Mexico, Duval Street, and beyond. Walking or biking is how most locals get around, but there is also convenient and free bus service called the Duval Loop with a stop close by.

The street view of "Serenity Now" is delightfully focused on a white picket fence, a palm garden, and a pillared front porch complete with four inviting rocking chairs. Sit here to watch locals out for a stroll or passers-by walking their dogs. Open the front door for a first view of the home's main structural and decorative motif-classic Dade County Pine on the floors and walls throughout. To the left is a living room with two couches centered around a glass and metal coffee table with a plush area rug below. The seating is embellished with colorful throw pillows that add comfort and a decorative touch.

The spot is perfect for conversation, for reading the paper, for playing a board game, or for viewing the flat-screen TV on an opposite wall. One couch converts to a queen bed should guests stop by for a weekend. Copious louvered windows provide plenty of ambient light during the daytime and close up easily for nighttime. Of course, there's central AC, wireless high-speed internet, cable TV, and Bluetooth speakers. Nearby a beautifully polished wood staircase winds up to the master bedroom with King bed, a flatscreen TV, and a full bath.

Back downstairs to the right of the front door is the twin bed bedroom (can convert to a King) with ensuite full bath. A door from the hallway also gives second access to this bath. Again the louvered windows are a highlight. Nightstand and lamps provide storage for whatever you want at your bedside such as a book you're reading and your cell phone. A walk-in, cedar-lined closet provides plenty of space for folded clothing items and hanging items. A flatscreen TV is easily viewable from the bed and perfect for viewing a movie or late-night TV. The adjacent bath has slate floors, a cozy area rug, double sinks, a glassed-in shower, and a linen closet.

Down the hall to the left is the kitchen with high-end Viking and Asko appliances, granite counters, and cupboards above and below. These cupboards hold all the kitchen accouterments you could need for cooking or just eating leftovers from dinner out the night before. Conveniently located under one side of the counter are the washer and dryer. The counter on the other side is raised and perfect for having your morning cup of coffee or informal meals seated at any of the four counter chairs. Adjacent is a more formal setting for dining with a classic butcher-block table and six upholstered chairs. Under one bank of windows sits an artisan hutch with drawers and shelves. At the rear of the room is a wall of louvered French doors that open to the deck and pool area. Across from the dining area is a third bedroom with a queen bed and generous closet space. The rear of this room is also a wall of louvered French doors that open to the deck/pool.

Because outdoor living is one of the desirable hallmarks of Key West life, the oasis created by the wooden deck, wicker deck furniture, BBQ, generous-sized pool, and landscaping is probably the most important aspect of this beautiful home. Since the weather is almost always perfect, you can plan to spend most of your time here floating in the pool, swimming laps, or stretched out on the chaise lounge or one of the matching chairs. Turquoise planted pots echo the color of the gleaming, heated turquoise water of the pool.

When you're ready to see the sights, the location makes it easy to explore the island's Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises. Or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, you'll find diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don't miss the Raw Bar, the Tower Bar upstairs at Turtle Kraals, and Schooner Wharf where you can eat a fresh Mahi sandwich under a banyan tree filled with tiny white lights.

In a few more blocks you're on Duval, where you'll find more of what Key West is famous and infamous for: tours, beaches, museums, water sports, shopping, bars, and over two hundred restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. There's always plenty of cultural activities such as live music, art exhibitions, and plays. Perhaps catch a movie on one of the four screens at the Tropic Cinema. Or perhaps stop in at Books & Books to catch a glimpse of Judy Blume stocking the shelves. Be sure to check your phone for sunset times so you don't miss the daily celebration at Mallory Square where locals and visitors alike gather to witness the sun sinking into the horizon and applaud as the last round edge of fiery orange disappears. Then stick around as artists and street performers entertain the enthusiastic crowd.

To know what's going on from day to day, you can check out Historic Hideaways' informative Area Guide/Events page at http://www.historichideaways.com/key-west-events/. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday in the Key West Citizen.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.
