Description

The art of island living involves making efficient use of limited space. This charming first-floor, one-bedroom apartment does just that. It occupies the rear portion of an award-winning 1890s Victorian home on Solares Hill, the highest point of land in Key West. This quiet Old Town retreat provides a classy and convenient base for experiencing the entertainment and culture America's only Caribbean island is famous for. In case you're traveling with a four-pawed friend, well-behaved pets are welcome.

Through a white picket gate beside the house, a landscaped walkway leads to a private little garden with exotic plants, a wrought iron bench, and gas barbeque. Up three steps puts you on the shady porch with table and chairs. Already you're probably having thoughts of grilling some fresh local catch and serving it al fresco with a bottle of chilled wine.

Classic French doors lead from the porch into the living room and a second set opens into the bedroom. The doors and wide windows throughout bring the island's delightful light and breezes inside. High ceilings, shining hardwood floors, and architectural details add to the ambience and functionality of the space. The living room features a large, deep-seated red couch, an area rug in the same tone, antiques, and original works of art. A ceiling fan whirrs above creating gentle air circulation. Sit here to watch TV or a movie or just chat with friends. There's also an armchair, shelved cabinet, a bookcase, and of course central AC/heat, wireless high speed Internet, and a DVD player.

Next to the living room is a well-equipped kitchen. Plenty of cupboard space is provided above and below, some with wooden doors, some with glass, and some with open shelves. One wall is the original pine, and an inviting dining nook with a cushioned bench is nicely positioned by a wide window looking out into leafy trees.

The full bath is conveniently located next to the bedroom. It features a black-and-white diamond-patterned tile floor while the other amenities are a subtle white. A rectangular elevated window on one wall provides natural light and ventilation for the whole room. Beneath it is glass shelving. The linen cabinet holds nubby white towels and extra shelves for your bath items. Next to the bath is the washer/dryer closet. And another closet provides plenty of room for hanging clothes and shelving for folded items.

One of the especially delightful things about the queen bedroom is the wide window on one wall and the glass door opening onto the covered porch on another. The bed is very comfortable with fluffy pillows and a ceiling fan above. A selection of books about the Keys and room darkening louvers add interesting functional touches.

But enough about living space. When it's time to go exploring, you'll be delighted to find yourself in a beautiful, historic, residential neighborhood, across the street from the library and only two blocks from the famous Duval Street with its abundance of offerings: restaurants, bars, tours, museums, shops, theatres, art galleries, festivals, and more. Park the car and walk everywhere or rent a bike and explore the quirky little streets and lanes of Old Town. Maybe discover Ft. Taylor and picnic at the shady beach, or visit the Key West Lighthouse on Whitehead Street and climb eighty-eight steps for a bird's eye view of the island. Maybe take a Conch Train Tour, a Historic Key West Walking Tour, or a bike tour. If the arts interest you, you've come to the right place for music, movies, plays, galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. You're also just three blocks from the Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find historic tall ships offering day and sunset cruises, or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you're interested in watersports, there are all kinds: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing, for example. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants with varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don't miss a spectacular sunset celebration every evening at Mallory Square where visitors and locals gather to applaud as the last curve of the sun dips below the horizon.

To know what's going on from day to day, check out Historic Hideaways' informative Events page on their website. Other information on the current music scene, movies, plays, gallery openings, and charitable events can be found at milezerokeywest.com (calendar section) or in the print publication Paradise, which is available at various locations around town every Thursday.

Free delivery and setup (over $75) of beer/wine/liquor is available from Kwest Liquors, 705 Duval Street. Historic Hideaways guests receive a discount on pricing. Order in advance and have your vacation home fully stocked upon arrival. Contact the Historic Hideaways office in advance for details.
