Historically, The Saltbox is an architectural form as well as a traditional symbol of hospitality. It is also the title of this perfect vacation residence with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a private deck, a heated cowboy pool (hot tub size) and more. Its amenities perfectly embellish the spirit of this ever-so-hospitable tropical island. Plus, The Saltbox is located a block from the White Street Corridor and the Truman Corridor with shops, galleries, Faustos Food Palace, the best cupcake place in town, etc. The Historical Seaport and the infamous Duval Street are close at hand by foot or bike. In other words, this is an ideal location in a fashionable, quiet neighborhood but within easy reach of all the fun you came here to enjoy.

The house, nestled on a narrow tree-lined residential street, is what’s known as Saltbox architecture or as an “eyebrow” house. You can’t help but notice the gable-roofed extension that creates a large awning over the second-floor windows to provide natural shade and cooling. The spacious front porch runs the whole width of the house and is a perfect place for sitting in cushioned chairs to drink coffee or cocktails. From here you can watch while bicyclists, dog walkers, joggers, and neighbors drift by. Plenty of green foliage fronts the house and sets an appropriate tone of lushness and privacy.

Entering The Saltbox through the front door immediately gives you a view of traditional Dade County Pine walls and floors so coveted by people who appreciate rare wood. To the right, a door opens to the first of the three bedrooms and bath. To the left is a living room perfect for socializing or quiet contemplation. Ahead of you is a hall, staircase up, kitchen, dining area, and outside patio oasis.

The first-floor bedroom has a comfortable queen bed where you can rest from all your sightseeing, eating, and shopping. The wallpaper in the room, like all the wallpaper in the house, is designed by Key West artists; this one features small-scale figures of chickens, sailboats, palm trees, and bicycles. A ceiling fan with light adds to the ambience as do the multiple windows and nubby area rug. A door opens to the full bath where a vanity with drawers stands ready to hold your toiletries. The shower and floor are tiled in ocean blue. A second door leads into the hall so that this bath serves not only the bedroom but as the first-floor bathroom with people entering from the hall.

Directly across the hall is the social room, with multiple windows filling the room with soft ambient light. The furniture is a deep cushioned couch and matching armchairs. A coffee table stands ready to hold glasses, a game board, cards, or anything else you might want as you vacation. Of course, there’s AC, wireless high-speed internet, and cable.

Back in the hall are the stairs to the second floor. There, you’ll find two nicely appointed bedrooms with a full bath that opens through two doors, one into each room. One has a queen bed and the other a king. Both have multiple windows, overhead lights, and area rugs. The lie-down test proves that both offer a good nap place and a good night’s sleep.

Downstairs is the kitchen with high end Café appliances ready for any cooking you anticipate. Maybe you had a fabulous meal out in one of Key West’s myriad fabulous restaurants the night before which you want to re-enjoy. You can warm the leftovers in the microwave, on the stovetop, or in the regular/convection ovens. Maybe instead you’ll decide to prepare something from scratch. Or a fifth option might be to grill some local-caught fish on the patio BBQ. So many choices. Plenty of cupboards above and below allow you to easily put kitchen accouterments out of sight after you have used them. For clean up just stack the dishes in the dishwasher and flip the switch. Across the room from the cooking area is a delightful eating nook and nearby a laundry closet featuring a state-of-the-art washer/dryer. Above is a fan with light and spots that add not only twinkly light but a fun, contemporary feel.

From here, glass slider doors open onto the outside oasis featuring a wooden deck, wooden privacy fencing, a dining area, and a BBQ grill. The heated cowboy water feature offers you the opportunity to unwind under a star-filled Key West sky.

Once you’ve fully explored The Saltbox residence, you can begin to explore what the rest of Key West has to offer: beaches, tours, museums, shopping, bars, and restaurants, many with open-air seating, some right on the water. If you’re interested in watersports, all kinds await you: diving, fishing, parasailing, snorkeling, and jet skiing to name a few.

Check out the Historic Seaport and Harbor Walk. Follow the wooden boardwalk along the Gulf of Mexico to find tall ships offering cruises. Or take an all-day ferry excursion to the Dry Tortugas. If you get hungry, a dozen or so restaurants of varying levels of informality ring the harbor. Don’t miss the Raw Bar, the Boathouse, and Schooner Wharf, where you can eat a fresh Mahi sandwich or Conch Fritters under a banyan tree. Or walk on down to find equally as enticing food spots and watering holes. Be sure to look up to see second-story restaurants like Bel Mar and A&B Lobster. With nearly four hundred eating establishments and forty-three bars on the four-square-mile island, there’s no excuse to go hungry or thirsty.

The internationally famous Duval Street is also lined with restaurants and bars, shopping, art galleries, tours, and much more. For even more restaurants, the Atlantic Ocean side of the island has Louies Back Yard, Sun-Sun at the Casa Marina, and Salute on the Beach, which is the sister restaurant to the famous Blue Heaven restaurant.

Don’t miss visiting the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, Hemingway’s House, the Light House Museum, and the Little White House. Maybe have your picture taken at the Southernmost Point or with a shark at the Aquarium. Be sure to set a reminder on your phone so you don’t miss the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, where visitors and locals alike gather to applaud as the sun slips below the horizon. If you’re into art, the island offers live music, movies, plays, art galleries, lectures, artists in residence, and more. Or stop in at Books & Books to catch a glimpse of the author Judy Blume stocking the shelves.
