The Broadway national tour of Legally Blonde the Musical stops in Key West this spring. Adapted from the 2001 film, the stage version arrived on Broadway in 2007 with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and a book by Heather Hach, and it went on to win a fistful of Olivier Awards in London. It has been a staple of touring theater ever since, largely because it does what it sets out to do without apologizing for any of it.

Elle Woods gets dumped by a boyfriend headed to Harvard Law who has decided he needs someone more serious. Elle follows him there, talks her way in, and spends the rest of the show discovering that she is considerably sharper than anyone — including herself — had assumed. The pace is relentless, the choreography is athletic, and the score runs from bubblegum to something closer to genuine feeling in “So Much Better” and the title song. Bruiser the chihuahua appears, as required by law.

It holds up better than its reputation suggests. Underneath the pink there’s a real story about being underestimated and deciding not to accept it, and the show is smart enough to let the joke land without ever making Elle the punchline.
